DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The wait is over! It’s time to take the wraps off the 2024 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season. Action begins next week with the annual Roar Before the Rolex 24

three-day test session at Daytona International Speedway that includes qualifying to set the starting grid for the 62nd running of the Rolex 24 At Daytona on Jan. 27-28.

A jam-packed field is on the entry list for the Roar, which runs Jan. 19-21 on the 3.56-mile road course that encompasses nearly the entire famous oval plus the challenging infield section.

The WeatherTech Championship qualifying session for all four classes concludes the weekend’s on-track activities and will stream live at 1:55 p.m. ET Sunday, Jan. 21 on IMSA.com/TVLive.

IndyCar representation runs deep at this year's Rolex 24 at Daytona

The presence of IndyCar drivers in the Rolex 24 At Daytona field is far from new, but what’s in store for this year’s edition of IMSA’s grand season-opener is nothing less than extraordinary.

As the current entry list stands, no less than 15 NTT IndyCar Series drivers will participate in this weekend’s Roar Before The 24 test at Daytona International Speedway roval

and return for the January 25-28 race. If the number holds, more than 50 percent of full-time IndyCar drivers will be in action across the four WeatherTech SportsCar Championship classes.

Porsche on top for first Roar Before the 24 session

Nick Tandy took the top spot with a 1m35.617s lap around the 3.56-mile Daytona International Speedway road course in the No. 6 Porsche Penske Motorsport 963 that he’ll share with Mathieu Jaminet,

Laurens Vanthoor and Kevin Estre as the first session of the Roar Before the 24 test days went into the books.

The session was the first of five today and tomorrow as IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship teams prepare for the Rolex 24 At Daytona next weekend, and for qualifying on Sunday.

Derani wheels Cadillac to top of second Roar session at Daytona

The second test session for IMSA’s Roar Before the 24 produced four different marques in the top four GTP cars, led by Pipo Derani in the No. 31 Whelen Engineering Cadillac Racing V-Series.R

as WeatherTech SportsCar Championship drivers set their cars up for the Rolex 24 at Daytona next weekend. Derani’s 1m35.217s lap (134.6mph) in the Cadillac he’s sharing with Jack Aitken and Tom Blomqvist was the quickest of both sessions,

topping Nick Tandy’s time Friday morning in the No. 6 Porsche Penske Motorsport 963.

WEATHERTECH SPORTSCAR CHAMPIONSHIP THE CLASSES

The IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship features two styles of cars – Prototype, which showcases the latest automotive technology and are uniquely designed for the racetrack,

and GT, which is based on road-going production models. These two styles of cars make up the series’ five classes – Grand Touring Prototype (GTP), Le Mans Prototype 2 (LMP2), Le Mans Prototype 3 (LMP3), GT Daytona Pro (GTD PRO) and GT Daytona (GTD).

To help fans follow the on-track action, the WeatherTech Championship uses a Leader Light System. It allows fans to easily identify the position of each car in its respective class.

The position of the car is displayed on an LED panel mounted on the side of the car and the color of the LED number corresponds with the class. For instance,

an illuminated LED red number 5 on a GTD PRO style car means that car is in 5th position in the GTD PRO class.




Grand Touring Prototype (GTP)

The newest and most technologically advanced Prototype race car takes to the track for the first time in 2023, featuring a common hybrid powertrain for all entries

that takes kinetic energy gained in braking and stores it in batteries for later use when needed. Four global automotive manufacturers – Acura, BMW, Cadillac and Porsche – are entered in the class.

Each manufacturer developed its own unique internal combustion engine and bodywork styling to take on this cutting-edge challenge.





Le Mans Prototype 2 (LMP2)

The Le Mans Prototype 2 (LMP2) is a closed-cockpit car developed by four approved constructors. In addition to the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship,

LMP2 cars are eligible to compete in other global series such as the FIA World Endurance Championship, which includes the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans.



GT Daytona Pro (GTD PRO)

GTD PRO, which debuted in 2022, include race cars built to FIA GT3 technical regulations and offers the opportunity for factory teams and driver lineups to compete in the class.

Manufacturers competing in this class in 2023 include Aston Martin, Chevrolet, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Lexus, Mercedes-AMG and Porsche.




GT Daytona (GTD)

The GT Daytona cars are enhanced (not defined by) technology and utilize the global FIA GT3 specification.

The GTD class consists of cars from leading manufacturers such as Acura, Aston Martin, BMW, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Lexus, McLaren, Mercedes-AMG and Porsche.

Been saying this for years now but perhaps this is the year I finally get my ass to Road America.  I’ve never been there and I live about an hour away.

IMSA is usually the first weekend of August there.

"Rexy" was a big hit at the Glen last year.

I'm off to a shit start this season and missed the Quali as I had to make a last minute trip to Maryland and just got back.
