My local pawn shop manager knows I’m a watch guy and let me know yesterday they had this Rolex Datejust coming off pawn today.

I went over this morning and looked it over and ended up bringing it home.
It’s a little beat up and the Jubilee bracelet has a significant amount of stretch and two damaged center links. Despite that, it had all of the links and a nice clasp. The crystal was a scratchy mess and the case has a few marks but nothing terrible.
I would say the watch has been sitting for a long time because when I put it on my timegrapher at the pawn shop it was initially running 10 seconds fast but the longer it ran the better it got. After running for a few hours, it’s now running about 4 seconds fast. It will be interesting to see how it does after running for a few days.

I cleaned it up and hit the crystal with some Polywatch and a lot of elbow grease and I think it came out pretty good. I threw it on a Nato and I have to say I’m genuinely stoked how it looks. In the future, I’ll be sending the bracelet to Rolliworks for a rebuild and based on what the Timegrapher looks like I may have it serviced right away.

Is it impolite to ask what you gave for it? Looks like a nice piece, but with all the work, had to come at a discount yes?

$2100. I tried to factor in every possible expense and based my offer on what I thought the value of the watch would be after it comes back from Rolliworks, and maybe a wee bit of profit.

Very nice job! Looked like a beater in that first pic, but after your clean-up and excellent choice of nato strap it's like a whole new watch. I'd be proud to wear that one. Bravo, and enjoy.

Great job on the cleanup! Nice piece. The strap works well. Give us an update after you test it for awhile.

Good snag! I like those turned bezel models, still get the classic DJ look but not quite so blingy as fluted.

That beat error is pretty nasty though, I'd definitely spring for the service. I imagine a fair bit of crusty old oil in there.

It will definitely get a service. I’m hoping it will run well enough not to have to do it right away. I would like to enjoy it for a few months before sending it off.

Very cool! Could be decades left on that timepiece.
Did anyone run the s/n for year made?

Second hand ticking motion gives some fakes away
Like yours better than the other model seen often

My guess was about $2k. What year is it?

1986

ETA, their initial price was $3000 and I was offering $2000. They came down to $2700, then $2500 and then $2200. I told them $2100 or I was walking and got it.

Are you going to have the everything refinished? That's a good deal.

3k was way high for that condition. You'd be looking at another 1k in costs minimum, I imagine, and maybe twice that if it needs parts replaced. I think you did good at 2.1 especially since it seems to be running relatively ok. Probably a normal service will have it right back to spec.

It left for Rolliworks on Friday. It’s getting a service, bracelet repair and complete cosmetic restoration. Because of the bracelet repair, the turnaround will be about a month or maybe a little longer. I’ll update with pictures when I get it back. If it turns out well, I’ll be sending them my Explorer II next.
