I need to do some major surgery on my kids' LaTraxx Teton.

As I started taking it apart, two things became very apparent:

1.  I need a good quality LED headlamp to work with such small fasteners.  I can't see sh_t with ambient lighting.
2.  I need. 4.5mm open-end wrench

Who makes a good quality LED headlamp?

Who makes a good quality 4.5mm open-end wrench?  That's a rare size.  I see some ultra-cheap Chinese junk online, but no Snap-on, SK, etc.

Thanks for any replies.

Related question for the headlamp guys... what's the best RC car to get these days? Is nitro still popular?

Hmm, in all my R/C years I have not needed a 4.5mm wrench.
In searching online R/C sites, none seem to list a 4.5mm wrench.

Might repost in the Hobby Forum

I have a bunch of RC cars and crawlers.  I have never needed an open ended wrench.  Good quality hex drivers (MIP), a few misc sockets, and needle nose pliers are all that is in my RC toolbox.  What is it that you need a wrench for that a socket won't do?

No.  Everything is brushless motors and lipo batteries these days.  Traxxas and Arrma are the go-to for bashers.  Losi, Tekno, and Team Associated are still big in the race buggies.  Traxxas and Axial for crawlers.

Headlamp I would get a Black Diamond

I would also maybe look in to a light up magnifying glass on a stand too.

@frankiebagadonuts

The suspension and steering ball joints are 4.5mm hex.

@Bunnysriflestock

I didn't realize GearWrech made a 4.5.  Thanks. That brand is good (enough).

How is this style headlamp for hobby work?

My experience is those smaller sizes are not forged.

I found these, but not sure if they are ideal.  Edit: Ebay links are not working now.  Search for item 204173526510
Edit #2: Same ebay set on Amazon.

Not an open end wrench, but: https://www.wihatools.com/products/precision-nut-driver-4-5-x-60mm

I have no experience with that brand of head lamp I just use various Black diamond lamps I have around.

Another option I forget about for micro wrenches is Moodys usa made.

@MeInMediocrity

I wonder if that laser-cut sheet metal wrench set is hardened.

It's been my experience that sheet wrenches wear out *very* quickly if they are not made from the correct grade of steel and hardened.

Nitro is still a thing but these days go with LiPo batteries. I have been in RC since the early 80s and have raced built many. Team Associated has always been my favorite but as far as RTR goes, Traxxas is the dominant maker! Fun and durable, Traxxas is hard to beat.

Black Diamond headlamps are my go to. Petzl are also good headlamps.

Just ordered this charger.

From what I hear, it's leaps and bounds better than the stock AC adapter.

So I took a quick look at the parts view on that Traxxas and you need a 4.5 Hex driver. Way easier to use on the ball stud than an open end wrench.

This is what you're trying to replace right?

Not to ask a really dumb question, but how do you remove the various arms from the ball studs so that a driver can be used?

There are no dumb questions when you're learning bro. So most people use ball-link pliers.

@EvoXGunner

Thank you sir.  That is incredibly helpful!

May I ask what nut driver set (that includes 4.5mm) you use?

@SkyRaider

Hey no worries bro. I have a few different kinds like these -

A lot of people swear by MIP or Hudy tools which are top of the line but in my opinion are overpriced. My main set is similar to the first pic above which I got off Amazon 3 years ago and have been awesome. I also have this Tamiya set which is one of my favorites and heavily used.

OK another question, sorry.

How do I pop the ball joints back into their sockets after separating them with the ball link pliers?

Thanks.

Some are easier than others but it just takes some force to press back on.  If it's in a weird spot, I'll grab a microfiber cloth and put it over the ball link and use some needle nose pliers.
