80 years is a hell of a run for somebody who spent about 3/4 of that time in the rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle.

Sad news.  I was just talking about the Allman Bros the other day saying that it was ironic that Dickie Betts was one of the longest living members since he was known to be one of the heaviest drinkers/partiers of the bunch.

One of the best songs ever. Just impossibly beautiful.

Blue skies Mr. Betts, you left a legacy which few will ever match.

Jessica is a song I could live a thousand years and never learn to play the guitar line.

^ Exactly!  I would expect about half that.

I went to the same high school as the Allman brothers.  When I was a kid, we would get excited when they were spotted in town.

He was one of the greats. Amazing melodic and rhythmic style. As a guitarist, he was one of those guys whose playing one seeks to emulate in order to improve.

I had the pleasure of working security for a show where he was headlining with a little 4-piece band during one of the Allman's hiatus times in the 80s. They put me on the edge of the stage like 10' away from Dickey. He was absolutely in amazing form that day. After the show, over by the van, I walked up to him, shook his hand and thanked him for all the music. He seemed almost surprised (pleasantly) to hear that. I then walked over to Butch Trucks who was the drummer in that band and did the same. He was also gracious about it.

he was some kind of cousin to us. I still remembering one of my Aunts introducing me to him in the 70's...it didn't register that he was THE Dickie Betts until later.

he was the talent in the band, wrote and sang their best, saw him a few times in pine knob and val du lakes, good shows.  7 turns and back where it all began are my favorites

Saw him at our local National Guard Armory with his band and Dangerous Dan Toler. Very small venue, if you could call it a venue. Great show.
RIP

Even though he wasn't an Allman, he may have kept the whole thing together as long as it ran.  You might give Dangerous Dan Toller and Warren Haynes a little credit too.
How many girls in this country are named Jessica because of that song? (guilty )

One time in Buffalo a few of us were hanging out before the show when Dickie walked up and joined us to chat. After a while he looked at his watch and said: "time to go in, come on". He took us in the stage door with him. I still have the unused ticket.
