Thanks!

No idea if I will ever do another 12 miler. That last mile or 2 was rough. May stick with less miles, but heavier weight.

I'm going the opposite way, dropping the weight and upping the pace. I'm still working back to where I was a year or so ago and am aiming for a 3 hour/45lbs ruck as a goal, but realistically the only time I carry that much is training and APC stuff. It's nice in that it makes anything I'd actually end up carrying seem light, but 45+ pounds just beats me up too much to do on the regular.

My pack set up for ~3 days is 32lbs or so.

Feet are a little sore but other than that.. probably would have been good for 2 more miles but didn't want to push it too much. This is the longest I've rucked with 30 lbs.

Nice.

My daughter and her fiance are in town for the holidays, we're going on a hike tomorrow. Probably do at least 8 miles. They won't be wearing packs but I'm going to bring 35-40lbs and see how that feels for a little more distance. The pace will likely be slow by my recent standards so I'm hoping it'll be a relatively easy outing.

Bad-ass! My ears would freeze without a covering.

I try not to do heavy rucking two days in a row to let my body recover, but I noticed this morning that I was 97% completed for December 62 mile (100km) challenge in the RunKeeper app.. I was about 2 miles short, so decided to do a smaller ruck this afternoon. (34 degrees here both yesterday and today, but no snow)

Ended up doing 3.56 miles with 40 lbs in 54:23 (15:17/mi pace).. really going to feel it tomorrow. I've done 40 lbs a few times but my knees and feet aren't quite accustomed to it yet.

RunKeeper has the January challenges up already - they changed it to 125 km challenge.. ahhhhhh might not make that one, ha.

After rucking 380+ miles last year and then doing an HTB, I'm rucked out for a while. I'll happily answer any questions people have if they tag me. In the mean time, I wish you all no injuries and to enjoy the scenery wherever your feet take you.

According to RunKeeper (which I only use for tracking rucks):

2022 I did 503.3 miles in 135 activities (average of 3.73 miles/ruck)
2023 I did 555.5 miles (ooooh) in 136 activities (average of 4.08 miles/ruck)

BUT I know I did much less weight than you - 95% of mine are 30 lbs dry; I aim for every other day, but I did 8.10 miles on Sat, 3.56 mi on Sun and 4.3 mi yesterday... and my knees are feeling it today, ha.

Got a weighted vest on order for Christmas. Going to see how it works out compared to my Eberlestock backpack.

Using ~45lbs currently when walking with the wife to keep the HR up (quite a bit taller than her and our pace differs by ~3-4min/mile).

Anyone else using a weighted vest lately?

Hoping to have it fit under my jacket/coats on the winter walks.

I use my plate carrier for workouts and my ruck for rucking, that's just me. I feel like the weight carries differently and the stimulus is different.

Is it gospel? No. It's just how i've always done things.

I did a whole lot of rucking in '20-'21 with the Illinois APC when we were getting rolling but I've been slacking for the last couple years.  At my peak I was able to do 8 miles @45-50# in 2:00, and 12 miles at around 3:30.  I'm a short guy and that 15min/mile pace is brutal for me to maintain.  I couldn't quite put up those numbers now but I've finally been getting back under a pack and putting in some miles.  One of the things I struggle with is the time necessary to do rucks of any considerable distance.  I think I'm going to focus on shorter distances and try to speed up my pace for a while.
I'd been using a ILBE pack and it was a fine pack for the money.  I recently got a surplus Mystery Ranch THOR III pack that's designed to carry some sort of electronic warfare signal jammer device.  It's highly specialized and makes a pretty lousy general purpose pack but it's really nicely made (Mystery Ranch after all).  I did a bunch of sewing and modifications to it to make it more suitable for general purpose use and I think the results are great.  It's comfortable and I think the layout will work well for field use.
Another downside to me slacking for a while is that I lost the calluses on my hip bones that I'd built up.  I guess it's just a body shape thing but no matter what pack I wear the hip belt abrades the hell out the front of my hips to the point of bleeding.  A patch of sports tape over the bony part fixes the problem but my skin had been toughening up when I was rucking a lot.  Anyone else have this issue?

Hey bud.

Small correction to your post, you did 12 miles in 3:12:36 in 2022, and that wasn't an easy course.

One thought on your chaffed hip issue- I've always been kinda jealous how you could manage to wear a battle belt and a pack at the same time, I could never make that work. I wonder if how high you're running your pack's waist belt has anything to do with your issues?

I see in one of the APC threads picture(s) of people rucking in deep snow... any tips for snowshoes?

I picked up a cheaper pair a couple of years ago but never got around to trying them.. These are the ones I got (if this link works) -

Amazon Product
  • SIZES & WEIGHT CAPACITY: 21 inches snowshoes optimized weight range: 65 - 155 lbs / 30 - 70 kg\uff1b25 inches snowshoes optimized weight range: 110 - 220 lbs / 50 - 100 kg; 30 inches snowshoes optimized weight range: 150 - 260 lbs / 70 - 120 kg. (Load refers to total weight of user plus anything they are carrying such as pack, equipment, etc.)

For 30 inch it says max 230 lbs, with my 30 lb pack and winter clothes I'm slightly over that. I've also found these USGI Magnesium Snowshoes - though from my little research the bindings are a PITA.

My usual trail isn't groomed, but it does get snowmobile traffic. Though last week I rucked and had to make my own trail in boots, added nearly 2 minutes to my mile pace and was obviously more tiring.

Let's ask the expert @Rosta97

That's the guy that taught the class you saw pictures of.

Though he may just tell you to learn to ski.

I like most of the msr snowshoes.

But if the snow only added 2 minutes to your mile it’s probably not too serious and I’d say the cheap ones will probably work fine.

The usgi bindings are rough. As apc members can attest to. There are companies that make upgraded ones for them.

I’d give the ones you got a try before you go spend $100-200+ on others.

And skiing is the superior method of snow travel. Does take a bit longer to learn though.

Oh shit, I didn't click the link. Yeah, don't buy those unless you upgrade the bindings out of the gate. I spent a full day and quite a few miles in those things. Better than nothing, but the modern ones I borrowed for the biathlon were soooo much better.

Just remember, that rucking isn't an activity for the obese (30+ lbs overweight BMI normal range).   If you're obese you're basically already rucking with your skeletal structure and joints hauling around all that weight.  If you're obese just stick to tightening up your nutrition and lower impact cardio until you can get that weight down.  I think rucking is also an activity for people who have been on a free weight lifting regiment for at least a few months and have an opportunity to strengthen up some of their supporting muscle groups.   This all sounds pretty "duhh, no #%(* Sherlock" to most of you here, but I've seen a lot of women and dudes who are overweight start rucking who are obese, because they figure "it's just walking and I can do that."

I kept forgetting to post - a group of us from Central New York got together last Saturday and did a 6.2 mil ruck in 1 hr 49 mins. @RobADK led the pack.

With water I had 42 lbs in my pack and was carrying an 8 lb weighted bar (rifle stand-in). I think everyone else had at least 40 lbs - Rob do you recall?

We felt could and looking forward to another. I think we could have pushed to 8 miles without too much trouble but some of the others hadn't done this type of thing in a while so a great warm up!

Had a new kid so trying to stay close to the house and not gone too long. 30# ruck.

Happy 4/20 Day! 4.20 miles is too easy so I'd thought I'd double it - went over a little!

I stopped about halfway through to re-tighten my laces, probably why the times weren't quite matching.

Well..... I tried. I was hoping to complete the Varusteleka Remote Military March - minimum 22 lbs and 25 km or 50 km (15.6 or 31.1 miles). My pack withOUT water was 29 lbs and I was going for the 15.6 miles (weight included spare socks and 2nd pair of shoes).. it was raining but not heavily.

Considering the previous longest distance I've done with any kind of weight was ~8 miles and I'm happy. I spent most of this morning draining and flushing my (hot) water heater, which involved filling buckets several times and carrying to the slop sink on the other end of the basement.. so I was already a little sore.

No time limit and your pace was moving along pretty good. I'm going to say you would have made it with better pacing. Either way, trying is better than sitting at home.

Thanks! I uhhh, had to detour home real quick, my stomach was making weird noises. I had already peed in the woods but realllly didn't want to do more than that. It would have been another 90 minutes to get to 16 miles - physically and mentally I felt good, though when I showered I did find the start of some blisters on my toes so probably good I stopped when I did.
