 Russian Tu-22 Bomber falling from the skies over Stavropol region / Russia  Russian Tu-22M3 Strategic Bomber Shot Down By Ukrainian Air Defence Russian state media outlet Tass has reported that a Russian TU-22M3 strategic bomber crashed in Stavropol Krai, southwestern Russia. The exact cause of the crash remains unknown at this time as some Ukrainian sources claim that it was shot down, which would mark a first for the conflict. Big doubt on Ukraine air defense being the cause of its crash. I'm only aware of them being a long range missile truck, launching far beyond the range of a forward deployed SAM launcher.
More likely inadequate maintenance/lack of parts leading to a failure. Its interesting to see it flat spin and on fire though. |

The vertical stabs on most jets just aren't designed to 'undo' shit like that, so it's curtains for the jet most times. edit for oopsie. TU-22 doesn't have engines split far apart. |

The question I have to ask is did Ukraine shoot it down?
I don't think they have the ability to shoot down a strategic bomber hundreds of miles behind the lines launching ALCMs. I also didn't know they had 220km capable modified S200s which were used to shoot down the A50 Awacs. Ol' Volodymr, you surprise me everyday. My cousin was responsible for approximately 8 Russian aircraft going down. Best mechanic the Russian airforce ever had.
