Play along:
Zombies or something worse happens. You were visiting San Francisco for a relaxing weekend and have to get back to your lovely home in Ohio. Power and all utilities are gone, government gone, all roads blocked, roving bands of marauders, etc. You have to travel by foot. You have your choice of supplies in a backpack (no weapons) and enough people died where there are still dry goods in some stores but many of them are guarded. You get a new Glock 17, 2 mags, and holster and either 50 rounds of JHP of your choice or 100 rounds of Federal 115gr FMJ. Which do you choose? Would you survive long enough to be able to use up all 50 rounds? Would one encounter with marauders wipe out your whole supply? Remember, you only have 2 mags so you’re reloading mags no matter what. |

My EDC and HD pistols hold HP's.
But my AR9 that is staged for HD carries FMJ. If it comes down to it, all of my ammo of any caliber is defensive/offensive ammo. |

My understanding is that most bulk fmj isn't made to the standard of quality defensive ammo, I've never had any problems shooting fmj (though not at anyone). I do have a few hundred rounds of Speer 147 TMJs, might consider that or hard cast.
Whenever I travel I bring as much as ammo as I can, just in case of (further) societal breakdown. Every pistol has a holster and rifle has a sling and light, even on a levergun for California. I weigh the ammo to see how much I can bring without breaking the carrier's rules, 11 pounds for Southwest I think. Driving to a free state means a combat load and a few boxes of ammo. Am I insane? Yes, but only a little. |
