Reading reports, they were having a tough time with the fire in the pier itself and decided to basically let the building go to save the pier.  Fire spread in the deck to 15' past what they call the  hammerhead, where the pier widens at the end.

Mayor already said they would rebuild the damage.

Park it close and pump all the ocean you freaking need onto those fires.

This is NOT rocket science.

ETA. Saw HDLSs post. Good for the Coasties.

SDFD should have a dedicated fireboat though, or the Port Authority. Or the freaking Navy.
Should be several lines on it.

There were already 3 other fire boats plus the Coast Guard cutter on scene when the San Diego Fire Department Fire Boat arrived at 4:35

It's all your fault Chokey with San Diego in the thread title.

The fire chief saying they will be out there all night.

They're saying they got it stopped about 15' past (toward shore) of the hammerhead (where the pier widens at the end), but having a tough time putting out the deck fire.

Chef at the little fish shop kiosk said she saw smoke coming up from under the pier deck behind the vacant Ruby's restaurant building.  They just had 5.5 million in work done on electrical and water/sewer pipes in the last year.  Will be interesting to find out where and what started the fire.

Dickhead fishermen. Sometimes we had had to fight them when surfing the southside in the 90's. They'd toss lures at us. Even old dudes need an ass kicking sometimes, and get their gear tossed over the side.

I looked in the windows when I was there in February. It didn't look trashed, but I didn't pay too close attention.

Running joke? It’s a binding agreement.

We’re evidently still in mediation with the bloody Border patrol.

Explain your "localness."

I grew up in N. County SD, as did my parents and grandparents. My great grandparents moved there in the 30s. Everyone who was actually a local called it North County San Diego. It most definitely is considered San Diego; you sound like a transplant trying to fit in.

Anyhow, while I'm getting nostalgic, OSide used to be a wild mix of drugged out homeless, surfers (not hippy peacenik surfers, but more on the Point Break side of things, my crew) and the absolute worst the Marines had to offer. It was about as sketchy as you could get in SD without going into the barrio (s).

The jetty sure could get good though, smell and disgusting water aside.

Last night the wife mentioned that Ruby's had caught fire.

She still has family out there that give us the local updates.

We moved up to Oceanside from La Mesa back in the early 90's.
Hill street provided our entertainment almost every weekend.
Surfing at Buccaneer beach was walking distance from our place on Ditmar/Morse
Plenty of great breakfast spots and more good mexican food places than Mexico.

Lived in South "O" for years....then we went east to the hills of Vista in 2008
Way bigger house and still had a view of the ocean and Carlsbad.

I do miss the weather down there.
And the breweries.

They have hoses running all the way out from shore, but there’s a firefighting water pipe system too.
