I put the Butt on last night @ 9 PM.  Added the BB Ribs this morning @ 7 AM.  Lunch should be quite enjoyable.

I used to marinate in Dr Pepper, or Coke, which may have done that, but I have never done any of those pro cheat methods.  Sometimes I use a cold smoke generator with the normal smoke, but temp is always at 225F to start, sometimes for the entire smoke.  Meat is always cold when it goes on, I have always done it that way.  I hear that judges ignore smoke rings these days due to the cheaters.

I stopped doing the marinate, it really didn't seem to add anything.  The smoke does all the talking. Sometimes with brisket, I do nothing at all, no rub.

Killer Hog AP is my go to rub for just about everything now.  It is mostly SPG with some MSG content.  Amazon sells bulk bags.  No need to go broke spending $12 for 4 ounces of boutique bbq rub.  Make your own or buy bulk.
