This position is that of a Criminal Investigator in the Office of Investigations (OI), Office of Inspector General (OIG). The incumbent of this position is responsible for planning, implementing, and guiding a national investigative program with minimal oversight from the Special Agent in Charge or the Assistant Special Agent in Charge. This position requires travel up to 50% to Antarctica.

Lots of fraud, waste, and abuse of government funds going on... with a sprinkling of sexual assault.

In 2022, the NSF published a report highlighting the ways in which the agency has failed its Antarctic employees. It said that 72 percent of current and former female employees believe sexual harassment and assault in Antarctica is a problem, that 59 percent of women had experienced it themselves, and 95 percent knew someone directly affected.

AIUI, at McMurdo and SPS, there's a couple of senior admin types who are deputized as Special (Deputy?) US Marshals, in case there's a crime serious enough to need cuffs and immediate investigation/police powers. This spot is probably for the guy who has to fly out to do a "real" investigation. OIG probably means embezzlement, fraud, grand theft, corruption, etc.
