What’s the modern equivalent to a Fanny pack for summer? Something big enough for a camera, pistol and maybe a bottle of water that doesn’t scream tacticool.

After my daughter got out of diapers,  I used the diaper bags.
Very sturdy, good pockets, and pink bunnies.

Been using one of these for about 6 mos. Best sling I’ve come across, to date.

Like half the women at my kids' dance class tonight were wearing them.

But on dudes in gym shorts, yes, I look at them like "is that for your gun or your Costanza wallet..."

I have yet to see a reason to wear a fanny pack.

Cargo pants.

Backpack.

Other things besides a fanny pack.

The options are limitless.

I’ve been happy with a Tour I got years ago.

But then I’m the furthest from cool you can possibly get.

I've found that the bigger they get, the less likely you're going to wear one. HPG is nice, but you need discipline not to overload it. Emdom make a decent one that lays pretty flat. I actually wore one when in uniform and my BDU shirt would cover it up quite well. Ironically, the one I really like is a simple, little Patagonia waist pack. If I wear a black shirt and wear it as a sling bag, you would never notice it, but it's small enough to carry some basic EDC when you're wearing pocketless/beltless swim or board shorts.

Sling bags, while seemingly the new "rage", are actually a pretty good option. I like the size of the Viktos Upscale 2, but you'll be challenged to carry a bottle of water with any of them in that size range.

ETA, if you use a "sling bag" for carrying some additional essentials and still carry on-body (which I recommend), a sling bag won't interfere the traditional OWB/IWB or AIWB access. Such bags usually carry an extra mag or two.
