The oil oil painting of the entire boat was what I was curious how much that would cost as that stuff isn't cheap, even for academic level products with the "artist level" stuff at $4/ml. No wonder all the artists are starving. The oil paint does have better coverage than acrylics and is giving you a lot more time to blend in the wood look perfectly, which I suppose is why you chose them. --ETA:  #3 for me, with the gray in castle walls and black/orange used/dithered throughout. I'd like to swap out the dragon for something less "Oriental" on the style though for something more Celtic (4 and 6 examples ish) , basically - Fewer "sawteeth" on the tail and wings that sweep to one spike each - not the flexible chainsaw blade. It might also be too ambitious to have flying ones. I figured maybe a couple sitting on some of the rock pinnacles, or even parts of the ship wreck.

Update 2/28
We've moved on to some new parts of the project. Yesterday we got the 2nd wing up. It's interesting to watch the flex in the PVC and foam over a day. Notice the wing tip against the wall.     This morning after sitting over night. The other wing did the same.   Students found a couple of 3D drawings of dragons and are working to scale them, print those off, modify them a bit, then place them in the caves under the village, and castle.   After finding the correct scale for our sail, students are cutting out fabric stripes to make our sail. We will have 4 red and 3 white stripes. Stripes will be 6' tall and 7ft wide. The red fabric will be the same as the dragon wings, tying the two together a bit.  Our water wave shapes are coming along. We cut out a few yesterday, and students started shaping them late in the day. We seem to be getting a good luck with them. Students are happy with how they are shaping up, and getting a good idea of the final vision. The bead and bubbles ordered yesterday will decorate these.   |

Update 2/29
We got update pics from the woodshop. Work still ongoing.    More cutting out lexan for our water waves in front of our ships' bows.  We've got more work to do on it(not cleaned up yet), but we attached one piece of lexan to see how it was looking. Not popular with many kids so far, but we are early into the composition. We will tweak this a bit, and add a few more, then evaluate further.   Couple more of our crew are now watching the progress.  Details around the windows continue on the tower.  Lots of progress on the sky above the abby yesterday.  Detailing our trees for the village.  We need paint behind the upper village tier before we can add tress up there.  Some 3D printed villagers. We need more.  3D printed dragon came out pretty cool. We will paint next and then start figuring out which cave he will go in.  Currently nesting on the castle   Our long ship is just about ready to flip over and be set up for hanging from the engine hoists next week. Most of the rivets are done, and just a bit more painting is required.  |

We decided we will let ARFCOM narrow the field for us on our designs, so the kids won't be voting till we narrow down the field of 6 to 3 or 4.

I built up the waves a bit more. It's not perfect, but since I've never tried anything like this before, I am pretty pleased with it.
Now I am going to be working on the stream and waterfall, but I might add some highlights with white paint to the waves still.

The eyballs need to be pushed out a little bit so the tips of the cornea/eyeball are visible slightly in sockets from the front, right now it looks like he's (she? it? sheit? xhe? missing dragon's preferred pronoun ) is blind. Should just be visible in front of the socket protection ridge behind the eye socket.< / Nitpicking Mode > @DK-Prof Waves look great! What is the wave material like? Really viscous glue or something flash hardened with a UV light or other? The other end of the ship up nearly on the beach needs a whitecap/foam wrapping around the bit sticking out of water, otherwise looks awesome and a 3D Printed viking on a surfboard would be hilarious even if temporary. Keep your miniature painting skills sharp. |

Update 3/1 March is here! Spring Break for us starts a week from today. Next week is going to be very, very busy.
If you haven't voted for a tshirt design, please do so!  It's been two years in the works, waiting for approval, and funding by my principal. Yesterday, the Robotics group prepared some videos to run in each of the pod displays on the new T.V.s Cool to see photos that I haven't seen since I posted them here.      Details were added to the edges of some of our lexan waves that were cut out earlier.   The sky behind our village was hand painted, then softened with the spray gun. She's going to work on other areas in the mural today with the short time we have.  A few trees were added to the village also. We have many more to add, but we are evaluating on how best to create more variations.  Gaps in the scales are being covered with the "light bulbs" of plastic. Paint will be applied over these later.  Couple coyote pelts will be used to adorn our dragon rider.  More of our crew being worked on. I love the shirt on this guy.   Helmets came out pretty nice on these two. Still have a bit of antiquing to do on them.   We had a bit of a mess up on our white stripes the other day, and they ended up 5' instead of 6' long. Today, with a new sheet donated by my wife, we now have 6' stripes. Students assembled them yesterday, late.  @backbencher Not sure if this is you, or me...... We might sprinkle a few legos on the bottom of the cage later.  Skeleton is 3D printed at 3/4 of an inch. We lost the pelvis for a few minutes but found it in the middle of the hallway, so all good now.  Our 3D printed dragon with some base coat copper on it.

Update 3/4
Week before Spring Break will be a very busy week. We have parent/teacher conferences tonight and tomorrow night, and an electives showcase also tomorrow night. WYTOPP standardized testing is on Wednesday, state basketball, and state speech & debate are on Thursday and Friday. We got a little stain on our 3D printed dragon on Friday. I'm hoping we see more of the 3D dragons this week.  We probably won't be putting any more oil paint down on our ships' hulls today and tomorrow, as it would make moving them very messy. We will try to move the long ship out of the 3D room today, and get it ready for display tomorrow night.  Shields and oars going on our village ships.  We have our sail together, and will work to get it on the cross beam today, and maybe up for display tomorrow night? Not sure on that part. Lots of details need to happen before it will be finished. Maybe we can at least hang it.  Shield production is getting into full swing. We are working to make 22. This will be how we start out each one.  |

We had a bunch of students gone yesterday for field trips, so some things like our sail did not get any attention. I'm hoping we see more progress on several fronts today. Students got a couple more of our crew members up watching the display continue. The helmets came out pretty dang well.   We did get the ship out into the hallway and breakout area for an easier move tonight to the commons for the electives showcase.  With the ship upright, we attended some issues that were difficult to address while it was upside down.  With sanding down the high spots on the rails done, students started getting some bondo into the recessed areas. Those will also need sanding, then repainting.  Base coat was also applied to the interior of the ship's framework where we couldn't reach before. Each rivet also needs repainted on the inside of the hull.  |

Update 3/6
Yesterday, students got parts of our dragon's lungs frames up. We originally had slightly longer arms, on the structure, but realized it fit too perfectly into the chest cavity and wouldn't allow much movement or exterior texture for our lungs, so we cut off a couple inches on each side. We have a few more parts to cut out today and attach before we can start thinking about how we are going to make this more lung-like.   We got a bit of paint on the "light bulbs" on the dragon's skin yesterday, but need more dark brown on the edges of the crinkles.  Tower details are still going well, and they are taking time to remove some tiles that break up the pattern around the windows too much and replace them with thin tiles.   Painting trim around the ceiling is getting pretty far up there. Progress has been good getting a base coat of paint down in the skies above our display. We should begin blending and detailing sections soon.   More trees were added yesterday to our village, and we 3D printed a few more villagers.  Our dragon was finished and ready to be displayed.  We need some small chain for our crow cages. I thought I had some, but we never found it yesterday. I'll pick some up soon.  Late yesterday afternoon, we began getting ready for the electives showcase. We brought out the engine hoists to hook up to our long ship for display. Unfortuneatly, our hangers and the high center of gravity did not match. Our "lean" to starboard was more of a capsize moment. We pulled the hangers and adjusted them, but not in time to mess with them and reinstall them for last night.   Moving the castle went pretty well. Three little carts and we were rolling down the hallway.   We cleaned up our breakout area a bit and put down badly needed new cardboard on the tables.  The showcase went well, and I had about 10 students show up to help talk to future freshman and they parents, as well as move everything back down to the art room at the end of the night. We had students working on the project during the showcase demonstrating some of the things they do. This was before the families were released from the auditorium.    |

The castle is a little bigger than I was picturing. Like 3 times bigger than I was imagining.
I hope you aren't going to tile the entire thing when it's taken this long to only almost finish the pillar. |

Tiles are just detail trim. We were never intending to do the whole thing. We will spray texture on the entire piece, then paint later. |

Update 3/7 It's still only Thursday.
With the ghost bow upright, we decided to see how it looked with one of the waves attached. Beads should be here today so we will soon be decorating the waves with bubbles.  The woodshop is busy working to fit the dragon's head to our bow. They came down and took some measurements, as well as directed students how it needed cut.   We discussed finishes this morning. We want to blend the bow and the head together, so my painters will apply some oil paint, then the woodworkers will do a bit of further cutting and detail work.  Our castle getting some balcony windows using our fancy level.  Details on some of the remaining viking crew members is looking very good. Love all the little layers.  |
