saw a Russian that grew up under Stalin get posed this same question.
He said Hitler was a better choice. his reasoning was that as long as you were a member of the party they pretty much left you alone where as the commies were always struggling for an upper foot in the hierarchy. You never knew when someone would call you out and you'd be toast. Maybe it also has something to do with German vs Russian culture. |

Voted Stalin, because he was mostly killing Soviets throughout his career
Hitler was worse because without Hitler, the USSR would've had no reason to unify, gird its loins and get its shit together. Without Hitler, Stalin's paranoia would've continued to purge the USSR of anyone with half a brain, and would've been no necessity for any sort of meritocracy by fire as they got in WW2. I assert that, without Hitler, the Soviet Unions would've collapsed under the weight of Stalin's insanity within a generation. Instead, Hitler invaded and gave the Soviets the shot in the arm they needed, and a reason to build a functional military and give this whole armed expansionism thing a try. |
