[Last Edit: Lucy]
After about 10 years in the workforce, I went from 40k to currently at 140k. I’m extremely overqualified and got lucky with a promotion that I thought I could leverage into a career. On paper it works, in real life I have a business degree and am an IT manager who understands about 10% of my day.
It’s not sustainable and the amount of stress, memory loss from stress and impact it has on the rest of my life is dehabilitating. I used to be really good at work, and celebrated constant wins. As the years have gone by all of that success has disappeared, like “magic in a bottle” Problem is I have become used to a 140k lifestyle. Going to 60k is going to be tough financially, but I think I can keep the house. The peace I feel going back to my original job is extremely comforting. The biggest thing that causes discomfort is that once this job is over (either I leave or am asked to leave)- this career path is done. Time to start over in something completely different. |

Probably time to move on. Unless you are making 7 figures or something, stress like that can kill you.

That’s a big cut.

Quit stressing and bank the $$$. All managers are incompetent. You are no different.
Make sure the employees that are carrying you are taken care of. |

Quiet quit for now? Seriously live on $60k a year and bank the rest until the inevitable happens. You’ll be glad you have the savings.

But what’s tough is knowing that I’m walking away from the last ten years- even if I have the savings it doesn’t get me past my future plans |

I'm going against the grain. You are paid that for a reason, look at other ways to manage the stress. I realized a bit back I will never be put on a "green" project. My skillset and experience means I'm one of the best they have to "firefight". I've come to terms I will be put on "red" projects the rest of my career. That was a huge problem until I got serious about my health and stress management.

10% of your job has to be telling someone to make sure it's plugged in, turned on, or to restart.
I can do that for $140k |

You are looking at this back asswards. Look to your people. There is one or more that are excellent at what they do who is keeping everything running. Find that guy. Not some one that sounds like that guy, the real that guy. Learn from him. Find some more like him even if you have to go outside organization to find them. Managing is not about what you can do. It is about what the people you place around you can do. Find them. Trust them. And ride'em like a rented mule...... |

I would bolt and adjust. Stress will ruin your life.

I retired earlier (one month before my 65th birthday) than I had originaly intended (was going to go to 70) for the very reason given in the comment above. ETA: My dad was a ceo at 2-3 manufacturing companies, worked basically 7 days a week. He used to warn me of the dangers of stress. He didn't take his own advice, however. He died a couple weeks after his 70th birthday. |

What makes you think your bosses are competent enough to notice?
|
|
|
Consider that your boss knows that you may be in over your head, but if your team is getting good results, that is what matters to them. I'd say ride the wave as long as you can and watch for other/better opportunities that might come along. There are a lot $60K jobs out there in many disciplines, but fewer $140K jobs. No guarantee you will be less stressed making $60K, look inward.

this prolly aint the place to ask for serious life and employment advice.....
what kind of IT job only pays 60k? youre making 140k in IT. im in a similar biz but no management. as far as i know no one in my company in IT except offshore makes that low amount of income. in general, a lot of times if you job search and a positions pays significantly less than you are making you wont be hired because they assume you will start looking for a job at your old pay rate. dunno how that scenario plays out within the same company though. |
|
|
If you’re over-qualified at your current job why are you swapping to a job with a 50% pay cut?
I don’t get it. |

I think I’d be moar stressed going from $140k down to $60k.
Ever thought about learning how to do your job your responsible for instead of just throwing in the towel? |

How do you know that your bosses aren't completely satisfied with your work? Self doubt is a thing.
Maybe your 10x better than the last poor schlub who had your position. Do your best. Let them raise concerns if they have any. |

60k a year is manageable . I make 55k and have leftover spending money for eating out etc. I have no car payment though and an extremely cheap mortage payment.

Honestly man depending on your age I’d ride it for a while. Pay off the house then you can go and work a mind numbing job making less. At that point as long as you can pay the taxes, insurance, keep the lights on your in good shape.
You could also start looking for jobs now and find something paying the same or similar and go that way. It will be easier now that your making 140 to find something similar than it will be to go from 140 to 60 back to 100 |

I'd keep working and learning everything I could about It. Our IT manager doesn't do anything but tell you who to contact if you have an issue. Sometimes I wonder if he has a clue.
