Exactly this. I didn't know the details, but expect you are being too hard on yourself.
I manage multi-discipline engineering and construction teams.
There is absolutely no way I can be an expert on everything. I do not try to fake it. We hired experts on the team for a reason and I let them do their jobs with minimal "management." I ask that they keep me informed and let me know if they need help or assistance. I publicize their accomplishments, look out for their interests, help then advance their careers, and shoulder any blame that comes along myself. We have relationships of mutual respect.
Contrary to the simplistic view that many here on Arfcom have, a good manager does not have to have all skills of the people he manages. In a large organization that is literally impossible.
