The Federal Aviation Administration and United Airlines are investigating how a person traveling with a Major League Baseball team was seen sitting in the captain's chair of the cockpit during the team's flight from Denver to Toronto. The incident occurred during a charter flight operated by United on April 10 for the Colorado Rockies, people familiar with the matter said. A Rockies representative didn't respond to requests for comment. A spokesman for the FAA said the agency is investigating the event. Federal regulations restrict who can access the flight deck rules that were tightened after Sept. 11, 2001. In a video posted to social media and later removed, a man appears sitting at the controls of a Boeing 757, mimicking pushing the plane's yoke and giving the thumbs-up. The video, which people familiar with the matter said showed the incident, was also posted to YouTube earlier this week. It isn't clear how long the man was sitting up front. "We're deeply disturbed by what we see in that video, which appears to show an unauthorized person in the flight deck at cruise altitude while the autopilot was engaged," United Airlines said. "As a clear violation of our safety and operational policies, we've reported the incident to the FAA and have withheld the pilots from service while we conduct an investigation." View Quote |

Additionally, there a number of rules on who can access the flight deck, who can sit in which seats, etc. |

United airlines huh. Isn't that the airline that's going to start hiring pilots based on race?
|
|
|
[#15]
Yep. That'll do it. Certain career suicide. Even if the airline didn't want to fire him, and the FAA didn't want to take certificate action against him, the TSA would likely yank his ability to get through security as a crew member thus rendering him unemployable. He's in a screwed trifecta.

I still see it as bureaucratic horseshit rather than an actual safety issue—letting them sit in the seat is dumb. At TWA the same crews flew a lot of the charters and used to open the cockpit door after takeoff. The real fun happened in the back. “Charter Connie” at USAir used to provide “enhanced service” in the back of the plane. |

I once got to do a little air traffic control at one of the regional centers. 35 years ago, and the controller who let me do it is dead, so we probably won't get in any trouble at this point.

AeroMexico let me sit in the navigator's seat during flight back in the '80s. It was a hoot.
The flight was from Los Cabos to Tijuana. From the navigator's seat I could see both the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of California. |

Back in the 90s I was flying a retirement flight with a senior Captain who announced he was opening the cockpit for tours. We basically had many of the passengers get to sit on the jump seat over the next three hours. Everyone said it was the best flight they ever had!
I was a bit nervous since I still had a thirty year career ahead of me. Crazy times. Cheers, AJP |

I've done several fam flights and rode the jumpseat in the cockpit. On one of the long ones, the captain had to go to the bathroom, so we did a shuffle and I sat in the left seat while he was gone, so he could get back in because the jumpseat blocked the door. I didn't fly the plane or anything, I just occupied a space, no big deal. He had some nice sheepskin cover on the seat btw.
