The Last of the 357th Infantry by Mark Hager.
ETA: It has good insights about the soldier's childhood and growing up during the Great Depression. He loved school but had to leave it to work in the mines. To get out of the mines he joined the Army and was a sergeant by the time WW II broke out. Fought in the ETO. |

It's a pretty condensed account of the adventure, but still entertaining. The details about the planning and preparation were quite interesting. I'll probably be looking for other books about the voyage of discovery in the future. |

Douglas Nash's Victory Was Beyond Their Grasp. It's about the 272 Volks-Grenadier Division.
ETA: I never paid any attention to the Volks Grenadier Divisions. Nash goes into the detail of their creation after the unsuccessful assassination attempt on Hitler in July. These units were supposed to be more loyal and had a political officer assigned. Good officers were carefully selected to lead them and they were given priority in equipment. At least that was the case of the 272 VGD. The book is more a history of the division's elite recce company, the Fusilier Company. Still, the manpower for the division were supernumerary from the Kriegsmarine and Luftwaffe and there was barely any time to train the sailors and airmen in infantry tactics. Despite the brief training, the 272 fought valiantly in Huertgen Forest. Several times whole units were wiped out and rebuilt but good leadership and functioning replacement system kept rebuilding the unit; even though it was never at full strength. The book is based on a suitcase that contained the Fusilier companys records. It was abandoned in a cellar and discovered decades later. Nash carefully went over them along with post war histories from both sides to build a credible account of this ill fated unit. |

Finished Albert Schwenn's Memoires of the Waffen SS
Presently I'm read Ed Eaton's Mekong Mud Dogs. From the book. Author, a grunt, is aboard a ship that is used by his company for standing down. I enjoyed Eaton's prose and narrative style. It's almost as if I were sitting in his presence and he was telling me his story over a cup of coffee at his kitchen table. I'm a nobody but I could see a cinematic version begining with him telling a reporter his story and then it moves/fades into a younger him being dropped off at Oakland (Alameda Naval Air Station). Excerpt: "Things got pretty quiet around the hospital, so the surgeon announced one day over the ship's loud speakers that anyone wanting a circumcision should report to the ship's doctor. Within minutes there were enough to full up the hospital beds, as it was a way to get some time away from the field. The surgeon started immediately whacking off the unwanted skin. He took each into the surgery room and then gave them a bed with an aerosol can that spewed out a freezing fog to keep any unwanted erection away. My roommate and I decided that it was time to hang some Playboy foldouts for stories, sex jokes, and all things sex. It was like when I had my hernia surgery; the last thing I wanted to do was think of something funny or hear a joke, and, of course, that was then all I was thinking of. The laughing would kill me, but I couldn't help it, no matter how much it hurt. It was the same thing here as the cans were emptied in no time. These guys were spraying coolant on their dicks all day and night. I never laughed so hard at someone's expense. I'm surprised one of them didn't kick the shit out of me." View Quote |
