The years after Vatican Council II, which is when these temporary concessions seem to have been made, were terribly confusing and destructive for the Church. There is no small number of allegations that the malefactors who orchestrated this diabolical revolution within the Church were secretly Freemasons.

The short-term allowance was an aberration in the treatment of this subject though. Bp. Schneider provides a compendium of the Church position.
