I havent messed with .22LR in about a decade

I find myself looking at .22 revolvers as a training aid to supplement since Im shooting revolvers pretty heavy these days

Cant quite decide between

Looking at the 617 4" Smith or the 63 3"

617 is more a full sized gun in .22LR where as the 63 is a stainless steel J Frame in .22LR. 617 is 10 shot where as the 63 is 8.

The 617 seems to be available locally which means I could atleast have a chance to be picky where as the 63 it seems I would have to order in.

Part of me thinks the 617 is the better buy but I cant deny a short smaller .22 being really handy. The 617 as it sits is a few more ounces HEAVIER than my 357 guns and 2 ounces from my 44 magnum. That is somewhat hard for me to swallow.

617= 40 Oz gun

63= 25 oz

If they made the 617 with a tapered barrel its exactly what I would want but alas they do not

What says the hive?

617

63

The 617 is a great shooter.

63 is much more handy. Plus it only gives up two rounds.

I'd vote 617.

I have a similar dilemma. A friend has offered me my choice of a 617, 17-3 6-1/2", or 17-3 8", all pristine and priced about the same. Im having a very hard time deciding.

Its really tough for me to decide

I feel the 63 is perfect sized

However Im trying to bear in mind that I mostly want this for a training aid and the 617 is a K frame which would transfer better for shooting my K and L frame 357 guns

But Im having a tough time getting over the fact its heavier

Colt Cobra .22

I’ve owned used the M617, M63, M317, H&R M999, Hi-Standard Sentinel, plus several S/A’s of various makes.
The M617 is heavy. Fine gun just it weighs too much.

I have actually purchased both of these.  The 63 for my daughter who is new to shooting.  It’s light and ergonomic but I thought it was pricey.

The 617 10 shot 6” for my wife as an alternative to her main firearm, a 686.  It’s the perfect trainer.

I have the 63 with Altamont Altai round to square conversion grips.  Its a great size and the Altamonts allow a full grip.

I just ordered a 617 6" last week.  Hopefully be in this week and can take advantage of the rebate.

It's sole purpose will be sitting on the kitchen island for me to walk to the deck and plink.  Or maybe walk to the front door and plink.

I feel dirty paying retard money for a modern S&W with limited uses, but YOLO and plinking is fun.

For training I'd probably go with the 617

A 3" 22lr LCRx is easily one of my favorite guns to shoot, I have no idea how many rounds I have through it- but it's not a substitute for a steel Smith

I have that revolver. It is a tank. I have a 617 as well. The 617 is a hair nicer and maybe a hair more accurate, but I'd probably keep the Ruger over it. Neither are going anywhere. I also have a Taurus 942 snub nose that has well over 1000 rds through it with no issues.

.22 revolvers in general are a pain in the ass. They like to be clean or they don't work so good. They tend to be really picky about ammunition. Accuracy can vary considerably from great to blech.

I've owned about a dozen over the years to find the two that I have now that work. One is the all aluminum 317 I don't think they make anymore that works well as a super light weight carry gun, and the other is a 70's vintage kit gun that actually works when it's dirty and doesn't give a shit what I feed it.

I have a beautiful old 6" model 17 that is worthless unless cleaned every couple of cylinders.

Hopefully the new 617's are much improved on that front.

Yeah I think its a bit pricey no doubt

But Im finally sitting at a time with a little spending monies in my pocket and that rebate goes out at the end of the month

Just trying to make a wise decision with what Im doing these days gun wise

A new neat carbine sounds fun too but generally more expensive and I just dont have the time to go out and shoot rifles these days. Pistols I can shoot during lunch for the most part

617

Super accurate, 10 shots, same weight as the bigger guns so it is plinking/training.

If you don’t own one yet I’d go with the 617 of those two choices. In typical GD fashion I’ll suggest an alternative that’s completely different. The Ruger Single Six convertible is a great little gun, and having a .22 magnum cylinder gives you a lot more versatility.

I have an older 63 4”, 6 shooter.   Love it.   It’s a fine walking in the woods and plinking gun for me.

I also have a 6” pre model 17, a K22, which is a k frame target gun.  I’d much rather have a model 18 4” gun.  The 617 is as close as you’re going to get to an L or k frame practice gun.  It’s heavier because of the full lug and the small bore.  I do wish the didn’t do the full lug as it would be more comparable to the k or l frame .38/.357 guns.  I want to say the early 617s were a half lug and looked better.  Maybe I am misremembering.  I never owned one but admired them.

617 is a heavy beast.  The Colt Trooper III is heavier I think.
Current production guns, the 617 wins.

Favorite would be the M18 or the Colt Diamondback.  They just seem to point better.

I am a big fan of the 617.  Being a K/L frame, it handles a lot like my 66 and 686s.  I have a 6 inch with a red dot that I have squirrel hunted with.  I've used a 617 with 22 shorts for raccoons that my wife put a contract on.

I have 2 63's as well.  AKA kit gun or tacklebox gun.  They are handy but they are smaller and don't fit my hand as well.  Kind of a J frame sized gun.  My wife like them since it fits her better / lighter.

I have a 617 4" 10 shot and so should you OP.

BTY, I tried the Winchester 42 grain 1300+ fps recently and they really are fun in that revolver and one of my new favorite loads for it.

The K frame also is a leaf spring vs the coil mainspring in a J frame.  I never warmed up to the trigger pull of a J frame.  Just me I guess.

It does have a pretty heavy trigger pull.

Mine is fairly new.  The rebound slide was kind of rough feeling at first.

I changed the hammer and left the springs stock.  Lighter rebound springs would not reset the trigger when it was new.

Also, it came with a trigger stop rod.

I love my 4" 617. While not the same frame it is a close match to my 4" 686 in terms of size and weight. I have a belt holster I can use for either.

I really wanted a 63 for a long time. Couldn't get over the prices though.  Ended up with a 3" stainless Taurus 942. I'm sure a 63 would be nicer, but I'm happy so far.

Yep, S&W 617, I think the MSRP is like ~$1,000.  I wished I had bought one years ago, when it was way less expensive, I think it was in the ~$600 range. BTw I also have a Colt 22lR Diamondback that is a kick to shoot, no pun intended.
