the S&W 617 is a standard K-frame with a 22LR bore, so there will be lots of metal in the barrel. BTW I have a blued 6" Colt D-frame Diamondback in 22LR, it is really shoot to shoot.

Things are pretty ridiculous when you say "just $700" for that. Good god, I thought that's what they went for and thought that was about $300 too many.

I really like my 617 no dash.  It is a 6 shot so that slows down the shooting a bit but it is a very well made revolver an extremely accurate.

If it gets dirty, it gets harder to eject the fired rounds.  I think they are known for tight chambers.

This. My Single-Six Convertible (center) shoots anything that's .22 rimfire, from CB Short and Colibri to both types of .22 magnum. Most versatile gun I own. It's also my number one favorite gun.

I don't have any of the new ones, but I MUCH prefer the K frame to the J.

My Smith 22lr's:

The little 34's just don't shoot as well as the K frames do.  My 4" 34 does "OK" but the 18 just kills it.

I was strongly tempted by an 8 3/8" Model 17-3 this past Friday. I could have had it for $1,225 OTD, which is a pretty good deal, but I chose to walk away since I've got a number of long weekend getaways planned for this summer and need to be a little fiscally conservative. Of course that didn't stop me from spending $800, OTD, for a 4" square butt Model 13-3 with original box about an hour later.

This S&W wheel gun addiction is tough.

Is that really the going rate on these? I've been offered my choice of 17-3's (6-1/2 or 8-3/8) for $750 and both are in very good shape, along with a 617 for $700 or a GP100 4.5" or $650. Maybe I need to quit dragging my feet.

While I was hemming and hawing about at least putting it on layaway, I looked up closed auctions on GunBroker and, yeah, that's a pretty good deal, especially when you add in the 3% CC fees, 9.5% sales tax, $25-50 shipping fee, and $50 FFL transfer fee I'd have to pay ordering from GB and having it shipped to me. I may go back later this week and if it's still there, I may put it on layaway, which will give me 90 days to pay it off.

If you are going to pack it around, the j-frame wins, but will be bitchier if you try speed loaders because the cylinder is very close to the frame.  The 3-in barrel is perfect and its what I had in a .357 60-15.  Not sure I'd care about the double action trigger pull, I would never use it anyway.  I shoot .22 Lr revolvers single action exclusively.

I like the older ones better also, but the new ones should shoot just fine and aren't going to be such a pain to find and buy.

I might eventually grab one too, don't feel like packing my heirloom Diamondback around.

A better pic of my 17-3 and model 41:

The 17 with the 8-3/8” barrel is “laser beam” accurate.  It’s no field gun, but it’s a very good target gun.  Almost as good as the 41……

If it’s still at your FFL, get it.

And @chase45 , if you want, you can shoot any of my guns.  The 18 really is perfect.

Looking at the 617 4" Smith or the 63 3"

617 is more a full sized gun in .22LR where as the 63 is a stainless steel J Frame in .22LR. 617 is 10 shot where as the 63 is 8.

The 617 seems to be available locally which means I could atleast have a chance to be picky where as the 63 it seems I would have to order in.

Part of me thinks the 617 is the better buy but I cant deny a short smaller .22 being really handy. The 617 as it sits is a few more ounces HEAVIER than my 357 guns and 2 ounces from my 44 magnum. That is somewhat hard for me to swallow.

617= 40 Oz gun

63= 25 oz

If they made the 617 with a tapered barrel its exactly what I would want but alas they do not

What says the hive?

617

617 is my favorite gun out of almost 300 I have owned. I have had it for 18 years and it is simply the most consistent shooting gun I have owned in ANY caliber, and amazingly with ANYy ammo, even the cheap stuff too weak to cycle a semi-auto.
It comes already drilled and tapped adding an optic, and I think the overall weight (mine includes an older Aimpoint) helps me steady it for shooting it better.
