what is the cheapest way to watch this? i dont get hulu or fx. there are simply too many 'streaming' services these days.

the original from the 80s was great. the book is great also. he wrote a number of good books.

i think his first was king rat

Waiting for the other two episodes so I can binge it.

Saw the first two.  So far it’s been pretty good.

I’m watching Kung Fu Hustle instead.

Been waiting on this since last year. Re-read the  book a month ago to re-familiarize myself with it.

It is more or less following the original mini series (and the book) thus far. Way more effort has been put into it.

The first two episodes aired today and thus far it is excellent.

I am a huge fan of both the book and the 80's TV miniseries.

I watched the first two episodes. I noticed Lady Moriko has a more forceful role in this version. She ordered Blackthorn to refer to her as Mariko-sama. IIRC in the book and miniseries she is Mariko-chan. She would not rate sama and I am not sure about san. I hope this is not a sign this is going to be another girl power remake of something.

I'm going in totally blind.

Really hope it's good.

The book was a bit too rapey and gross for me. I really enjoyed Taipan.

You can get the original on Blu-Ray off Amazon, which I did before I even knew they were doing a remake. I wanted to watch the original first but the missus insisted on the remake first.

I've watched the original mini series at least twice. It's fantastic. Hope this one is good, but I have doubts.

I read the book a long time ago, but I can tell just by watching the trailer that this version has a lot more girl power in it.

Mariko shows up way earlier than in the book and you are introduced to her by her putting a group of samurai in their places while they attempt to oppress another helpless woman. Turned it off. I'll enjoy the book again.

The scene with the wife and baby? Is that how you interpreted that?

Yes it is because it did not happen in the book. It's girl power bullshit.

I plan to watch it.  Clavell is an one of my favorite authors, and Shogun is a great book.

I hope the series lives up to it.

Mariko is a very strong character in the book, and on multiple occasions, she picks up a weapon. she is samurai after all.

It has been like 20 years since I read the book. Can you point out women defying samurai? Also the part when she goes from being Mariko-chan to Mariko-sama.

Wife & I are going to start watching it this weekend. I remember watching the original with my parents, but I was 8 yrs old, so I don't remember much other than Allan Quatermain being the Shogun. lol

Mariko is samurai. Samurai is a society class. It’s all outlined in the book.

Someone brought up the scene where the samurai were they to take the baby. They were not common men.

As I said, she told Blackthorn to address her as Mariko-sama. From my recollection of the book she was also Mariko-chan.

-Sama?! LOFL.  Yeah, that doesn't happen.  (Although the eldest Japanese attorney for our client was quite tickled by my inquiring whether -sama v -san would be appropriate.)

Mariko was samurai, right?  Would -san be appropriate?  Especially when said by someone as zero-status as the Anjin was early on.

That is such a heavy-handed edit, since it isn't in the book, you know it is certainly blatant girl-power propaganda.
