European countries are rich. They have a high standard of living. Most have universal healthcare and free universities. Nobody in Europe has to worry about declaring bankruptcy because they can't pay their medical bills.
They also have a lot of leisure time. European Union legislation mandates that all 27 member states must by law grant all employees a minimum of 4 weeks of paid vacation. Many go beyond that. it's not uncommon for Europeans to take four to six weeks vacation during the summer and at least a week around Christmas. They can afford to take that much time off work. More than many Americans. So why do we subsidize their national defense? Why does America spend more to defend Europe than any European country? |

|
Because it’s in our interest to have a safe and secure Europe.

So they use our money and prop up the US dollar as the world's reserve currency.

How would they have 7 weeks of vacation a year and all hose other benefits without the US paying so much money? See, there is always an answer....

Because we’re like the fat kid with low self confidence on the playground. We give away our toys and lunch money to the other kids to try and buy their love and make them hate us less. It doesn’t work.

Even if we stopped paying Europe for NATO what makes you think the powers that be, walstrret and hedge funds, would allow us to have a higher standard of living?

America subsidizes a significant portion of the world. Humane packages, aid packages, military support, prescription drugs you name it we pay for it in most countries. Well the 50% of actual taxpayers.

We subsidize them in the sense that our military is huge and over supported/supplied.
They do buy a shit ton of US defense equipment in general (even more so since 2022). This is often understated. |

View Quote It gets even better when you realize these prescription drugs have a harmful, some even devastating effects on many people. Some people end up in an aggressive state in which they kill one or more people, or take their own lives. Some are so broken by these medications (for the good deal of people who hate “the vax”, yes, at least some people were broken by it, in addition to other things) that they take advantage of an assisted suicide program in their country, or perhaps end their own life by their own hand. It isn’t just in the US, although apparently people in other countries pay less for prescription medications, some of whom suffer severely harmful and extremely long lasting effects because of them. |

My children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren will have to pay, if they have anything to pay with. Can someone explain how we are "subsidizing" Europe?

Entire premise is flawed and retarded.
There is nothing we do in Europe that we wouldn't still want to do without NATO, and it would cost us significantly more to do those things, both financially and politically. |

You can't skim from a money hose, if there is no money flowing through it.
This applies to most govt subsidy schemes, not just foreign aid. |

It buys us influence. No other nation influences the world like the US. It gets us peace and sway in world affairs. It's costly to stay at the top of the world order.
But ya, they should be spending more on defense which is why I fully support Trump's stance on it. |

They just need to get serious about getting their shit together on building out their military industrial base. It irritates me seeing them acting like their hair is on fire, panick about Russia. Yet little movement on correcting that problem in the urgency that's required. |
