Not a very good time to be taking wolves unless you just want them dead, the fur has been going bad for weeks...January/Febuary is the time for wolves if you want premium fur...Not much use killing them other wise unless you just want to waste resources.....Also, calling them in is the way, if you have a good enough caller...The key on wolves is a CD that one of the leftist orgs made years back...they took professional sound equipment into Denali and recorded a wolf pack...Trappers found the CD(used to sell it in downtown Anchorage to tourist) worked so damn good it forced them to stop selling it cause the wolves were getting slaughtered...

I'm not really concerned about the fur quality. |

A socialist may indeed be academically superior.
And yet, they are most certainly emotionally retarded. Public education is the opiate of the masses. |
Hope the Wyoming/Colorado border is full of wolf hunters!

Good luck. I think a wolf fur laid on the dresser would be pretty sweet myself.

We set up and called coyotes one night in the NF north of Ellensburg. Nothing answered. After we bedded down, the wolves started howling all around our camp. They were within 100 yards, I'm sure the calls brought them in.
I was sleeping in back of my truck with the tailgate down, so I was a little nervous if they came into camp. But one of our guys was in a hammock a few yards away, I figured they'd try to get him and the commotion would give me time to respond. On that trip we saw lots of deer and elk. I figure the wolves go where the food is. A few weeks later the place was deserted and we heard the wolves way out in the distance. Lesson: always camp with someone in a hammock. Also wherever there's wolves, coyote will be scarce. |

I know I'll never go home.
So set fire to your ships, and past regrets, and be free. |
I’ll trade you some hogs for some wolves, you can keep that white stuff though.

That mirrors my wolf hunting experience. Bought a couple $35 tags and wandered the ID wilderness for a week with a nice rifle just enjoying the snow and scenery and alone time. Never saw or heard any wolves but 10/10 would do again.
Congrats on the gold leg. Keep after it. (I legged out fifteen years ago. Time flies…) |

I want a wolf too.
Hunting them and putting the pelt on my wall is on my bucket list. |

You save 18 caribou per year for each wolf you kill.
That's why I kill wolves, more caribou for us humans. There can only be one apex predator... Blaze away |

No dice today either. Got a great photo for the OP though. Going to try a different area tomorrow.
Those of you with a lot of (relatively) success wolf hunting, how long do you usually wait between howls? I've heard varying numbers but would love more input. |

View Quote I know guys who have gone 10-15 weekends a winter over years who never saw a single wolf...As I said, calling them in is the answer, although if there is a big herd around you stand a good chance of seeing some if you stake out the herd...But to just arbitrarily pick a spot and setup and hope a wolf comes by, well one will at some point, but that might be years from now... |

I'm aware...my spot wasn't arbitrary. Both tracks and scat close by. At what intervals do you play howls to draw them in? |
