My mother taught drivers ed for a couple of decades. One of her cars was a 3 cyl Geo Metro.

Car was in good shape, clean, but the engine had about 170k all city miles.

She took it to the dealer for service because the engine was running rough.

They told her to buy another car. The engine was not made to last that long.

She got herself a corolla.

Similar things happened to a former fuck buddy. She's been driving a stick shift Toyota Matrix since we were together in 2011 - and it was used then. Apparently last year it suddenly began running horribly. Took it to a shop and they basically said it was too old and there was so much wrong with it that they weren't going to look at it and she should just buy a new car. Keep in mind she works with special needs kids in the local school system; she loves her job but doesn't have a pot to piss in.

Her current boyfriend told her to call a guy he knows - shade tree mechanic but apparently very good. Takes about 5 minutes to diagnose it - one of the spark plugs blew out of the head. $50 insert kit and a new spark plug and the car has been running fine since.
