Laurel Canyon 1972
Our trio band visited the Canyon home of DOORS producer, Paul Rothchild, and auditioned for him. He likee our original music and asked us to bring him a full band. After two days and three nights of a bat food binge, I realized the lifestyle would kill me. Quit the band, called a cab, took AmTrak back home south from Los Angeles and gave up the idea of ever being a rock star. Ok, it was more than 15 minutes, but not by much.

My high-school football team won state championship one season. Our reward was a dinner with the NY Giants and we also got to play a scrimmage during half-time at a NY Jets game. The scrimmage was just our offense v. our defense. During the scrimmage I intercepted a pass as a middle linebacker on defense and ran it all the way back for a touchdown! It was amazing, my parents were never so proud of me and an entire stadium of the crowd was cheering! Here's what happened though. The scrimmage was actually supposed to be staged. We rehearsed it in practice and the QB, the coache's son, was supposed to throw the winning TD pass and get all the glory. He just happened to throw the ball right in my reach above my head and honestly my instinct just took over and I intercepted the ball. I mean honestly I don't think I really meant to do it on purpose but for the entire season I was training and practicing to tackle people and intercept passes so yeah instinct just kinda took over. I was able to run it back for a TD in all the confusion because that part wasn't rehearsed and nobody knew what was going on so I just took advantage and ran it back. It was awesome for me!

As volunteer underwater archaeologists, my dad led a small team into the Dismal Swamp and we found the long lost Confederate gunboat CSS Appomattox. We also found what was likely the first Custom’s House in NC dating back the the late 17th century. We dove for more than 20 years and recovered more that 10,000 artifacts from the site. A couple years back our work was displayed in an exhibit in the Museum of History in Raleigh.

I was invited to the launch of the Mars Curiosity rover as a VIP guest of NASA. My wife and sons and I were taking a pre-launch tour and they had a mock up on display. I started explaining to my family about the rover and how it worked and one of the tour guides overheard me and asked how I knew so much about it, so I told her.
She then proceeded to start telling the other people who were walking by that I had actually worked on the real rover. I was so embarrassed that I got away from there as quickly as I could. Sorry lady, but I'm not part of the tour. |

After the ground war ended in Desert Storm we were moving in column to a new laager.
CO came on the radio and said there was a film crew on the road and each tank was to move up onto the road, turn right and drive away. Driver’s hatches were to be buttoned up or in open protective. Me being the kind of soldier who thought orders were for others, I opened my hatch and flashed a peace sign, bobbling my turn. Dad said he saw it on the news, so they knew I was ok and made it through the war. Communications were spotty and we never were near phones, so I hadn’t been able to contact them to let them know I was ok. |

Our town was flooding my senior year of high school. The seniors were given the option to sandbag the river bank. Of course we took advantage of an opportunity to get out of class. One of the local news crews came out and filmed us, and I was in a closeup.

Mine was in 1990 while in college. My roommate, his friend, and I ran down a young thug who dragged a young girl who was walking to high school into the alley next to our house. It was a several block chase and we finally took him down inside a Delhi. The owner was flipping out as he had no idea what was going on until we told him to call 911 as the punk just tried to rape a young girl. Half the city cops showed up as they thought he was the guy raping young women in the city.
We made the city paper and local news and got a recognition letter from the University. My roommate did not pay for any beers at the bar for the rest of the year. I was still underage and missed out on free beer.  Police told us the guy was wanted on a warrant out of NYC and had been shot once before. One officer asked us why we did not kick the crap out of the guy. We said we did not want to get in trouble, he laughed. I guess back in the day good Samaritans got a pass unlike today. |
