What is protein folding and how is folding linked to disease?
Proteins are biology's workhorses its "nanomachines." Before proteins can carry out these important functions, they assemble themselves, or "fold." The process of protein folding, while critical and fundamental to virtually all of biology, in many ways remains a mystery. Moreover, when proteins do not fold correctly (i.e. "misfold"), there can be serious consequences, including many well known diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, Huntington's, Parkinson's disease, and many Cancers and cancer-related syndromes. You can help by simply running a piece of software. Folding@home is a distributed computing project people from throughout the world download and run software to band together to make one of the largest supercomputers in the world. Every computer takes the project closer to our goals. Folding@home uses novel computational methods coupled to distributed computing, to simulate problems millions of times more challenging than previously achieved. Some things to know: This will make use of 100% of your processor and/or GPU. You may experience a higher electrical bill, and wear and tear on your PC due to heat, so make sure your fans are clean and working. To run my GTX 1060 it costs in electricity $0.25 a day at $0.10 a kilowatt hour rates How many PPD (points per day) can I expect from my PC with what GPU? est. (you can also double or triple these numbers with SLI or Crossfire)(some older ATI cards show low numbers, they were not optimized for folding and use more power) from: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1v5gXral3BcFOoXs5n1M6l_Uo3pZpQYogn6gVlxRPnz0/edit#gid=0 |

crap, already joined Ubuntu fah group...
I also stopped my program from running...using alot of cpu on a P4...not sure how much P4s can take. I dont want this one going down. Anyone care to share info on how much processors can take? |
|

I'm already there.

But a P4 will eat your electric bill up pretty quickly. If you have a newer Nvidia graphics card you can run folding on it and it blows CPUs and PS3's out of the water. |

Crunching with my Nvidia 280GTX. |

Joined on one of my work machines. I could probably get another 30 servers running over the holidays, but then I'd have to clean them up before we come back January. But I'll see what I can do.

I assume I will show up on the team page when my PC starts turning in WU's?
|
|
|
The CPU client runs at a very low priority. Even though you cpu usage shows near 100% you won't notice much slow down as the client gives up it's time for higher priority programs.
The GPU client is the most productive if you have a newer kick but video card you should look into it. |

Yes! I have one machine running 2 GPU clients, 1 CPU client and 1 SMP client.
My other machine is running 1 GPU client, 1 CPU client and 1 SMP client. I have also put it on a couple machines at work. I'm thinking about adding a nother 4850 to my secnd machine and running two GPU clients on it as well. |
|
|
Wow, this GPU client is fast on my 280GTX. I am cranking out 1 WU every 1.5-2 hours.
|
|
|
My Dell, 2.2ghz Celeron, 1GB RAM W2K, will be finished at about noon Saturday. The ancient HP, 1ghz PIII, 256mb RAM W2K, will be finished on Dec 31. This isn't the fastest computer on the block, but it's stable and reliable. |

This may sound like a dumb question... but is the folding at home project producing measurable results?
If not, do they know what kind of time-frame to expect some results? Or does it not work like that? |

uh how big are these work units? my gpu one is doing 10,000 at a time. When I first started I was using the CPU one at the first one was 500, now its like 2500. Obviously it takes alot longer to do 10,000 at a time.
What sizes are you guys dealing with? |

My passive-aggressive competitive nature is rearing its ugly head. When I get into work tomorrow I'm loading it up on some more machines. I'll have to unload after the first of the year, and I'll never reach the top 10, but it's going to be slow at work anyway.

You get more points on size/time to complete. Compared to most you are flying through them. Hell I have been doing it for about a week and I have moved up to #30 in the team rankings. I can crank out a large WU on my GPU in about 1.5-2 hours. My Core i7 OTOH takes over 8-12 to do a large WU. |

Yeah, It almost has me wondering what would happen if I got another video card and put the joined them if it would go any faster, this video card is surprising me, I stopped running the CPU and I'm only running the GPU. I know this isn't a race, but damn, its beginning to feel like one, competitive spirit is coming out. |

I have go for quantity over quality. Most of my servers are optimized to do little more than push fibre channel I/O, and they've been down for a week. If my IT department would get on the ball and fix the PDU's I might be able to get something done.
As it is, I've moved up to 42nd. Not bad for a laptop and a couple desktops I guess. |

I'm going to have to unload most of the servers tomorrow, so I guess I'll wallow in mediocrity. If I can break into the 20's before then, I'll call it good.

GTX 280 is getting 8000+ PPD, taking a little over an hour for each work unit. That's about twice what I was getting with my ATI 4870 which was about 4000 PPD. I'm thinking about adding another GTX 280 and bring that machine up to 16000+ PPD.
By the way out team is moving up in the ranks. It was 507 when I started folding about a month ago. Now we are 488. If the whole hive was in on this we would be #1 in a year! lol http://fahmon.net/ <- cool program to monitor you folding rig and calc your PPD. |
