This is one of my favorite Windows programs. Makes life on Windows just a little bit easier
https://code.google.com/p/altdrag/ Just hold down the alt key and left click anywhere in a window to move the window, or right click near the edges to resize. So if you right click at the to or bottom towards the middle, you'll be able to drag and resize vertically. Same on the left or right sides to resize horizontally. Click near the corner to resize diagonally. It's a shame this functionality isn't built into the window manager, as it should be. |

The original post is a little (okay, a lot) stale at this point...but many of the programs are still useful and/or still developed.

Glad I visited this sub forum. I had forgotten about OpenOffice...loaded on kid's laptop and notepad.
No freeloading so here is my contribution http://www.nchsoftware.com/videopad/index.html Yeah, I know most systems come with MovieMaker, but the versions I have seen are all over the board. Some you can take snap shots, some you can't. No free plugins either. You can add [free] plugins to NCH. I have one for RGB adjustment. Email me if you want the plugin as I cannot find link. |

OpenOffice is good, but it has since forked, the modern equivalent is http://www.libreoffice.org/ .

Thanks.
Yes, I just discovered this after looking more into it. I installed Ubuntu last on my kids problem child laptop (Vista) and wow. I am impressed. Still testing it out. Might make the switch on my one system. |

Great software.
Might be nice if it were to update, since I couldn't run some of the programs due to the 64 bit system on Windows 7. Thanks KS for your help in providing the thread! |

I was surprised to not see Notepad++ on the list. It's an amazing text/hex editor. You can donate but they don't nag you.
I'm not sure how many of those are still around, but on every new system I build, it gets these as must-haves:

I will add to this list, most probably already know, but you can use the chrome os recovery tool and turn an old laptop into a chrome book. It works really well and will work with almost any old laptop.
The only downside is no playstore access but for Google docs, browser, etc it does a great job of getting some use out of an old laptop. |

Sometimes I found finding safe versions of the opensource s/w can be an issue then I found patch my pc Home edition (free)
It is a good location to get common open source items + it lets you keep said items patched. The company also provides patch management to many big companies to deploy updates to their network. |
