Picked up this P-38 from a friend's family member today. He said it was given to him by an older family member who recently passed away. Said the older family member brought it back from the war.

It has all matching numbers and the parkerized finish looks original, as do all the Waffenamt stamps. No import marks nor Russian capture marks. Looking forward to shooting it.

That's a great looking P38.
The Mausers are worth more than some of the other wartime P38s. I have a Spreewerke 1944 P38, the machining isn't as fine as on your Mauser. I haven't shot it yet either.

Just remember, no hot ammo.
These older P.38s with the thin slides can crack their slides when shooting hot ammo.

Nice pick up.

Thanks for the tip. I plan on shooting basic 115 grain NATO ammo through it.

The wisdom of the folks on the Walther Forum and the P38 Collector forum is to use standard pressure 115gr. or 124gr. FMJ only, and not +P or NATO spec high pressure ammo.  You have an all matching collectable piece there, if it were to develop a crack in the slide, sure you could find another slide, but it would no longer be an all matching collector pistol, and much of it's value would be gone.

That said it's your pistol, so do what you feel is best.

course it's a $1500 gun at best, so really, how many other $1500 plus pistols do you shoot and worry about destroying the value

realistically it's not a 480 code, so take normal factory ammo out and shoot it.

there are literally thousands and thousands and thousands of BYF's out there

enjoy it
