Anyone buy a Hi-Power from Arms?  What type or variant did you end up with? Looks like a value to me.

Could be awesome - it's just that you can't even see a photo of the one you are buying.

Aim has them in stock and on sale.

https://aimsurplus.com/products/belgium-fn-hi-power-9mm-handgun-w-rare-alloy-frame

The picture at Armsunlimited is an alloy, but it's not mentioned.  You'd think they'd include this detail if all of them were alloys.  May be luck of the draw.

Arms Unlimited confirmed these are alloy frames. I placed an order Friday evening and just got notice it has shipped. Shipping was only 9.95. Not bad.

I'm very interested to see what you wind up with. I've been back and forth about a hundred times to order one or go with the sa35 or a turkish clone.

Sounds like you did well depending on overall condition of your anticipated alloy frame HP. Years back when FN/Browning HP were the craze then the alloy framed slowly started to appear. People were paying stupid money for them. These prices are in line I believe if your interested in an alloy frame for collecting, shooting (minimal) or customized carry. Looking forward to pictures!

That looks pretty good overall.  Also appears original, as made by FN in 1975.  FN was an early adopter of that flat, matt-black paint that we now call "Cerakote" or good old "header paint" back in the car hobby world (K-G).  See the Belgian "pineapple" proofmark raised in the paint of your last photo?  That would be filled and dull if the pistol had been refinished.  That's a neat old High Power!

Glad to read both of you purchaser's are happy with your new to you Browning Hi-Power's from Arms Unlimited. Super pictures and good description. But I thought you'd both be receiving "Alloy" framed pistols since the BHP in the advertisement picture is an Alloy frame. And the one customer feedback said they received an alloy frame. Must be luck of the draw. But you both did well.

Yeah fr sure. I wonder if the fact that it is an alloy frame makes it more likely to have to replace the locking lug?  Seems logical.

Are alloy framed guns acceptable for a recreational shooter or more for collecting.

Finally got mine tonight! Wow, it went on a journey- UPS sent it all over the place, it arrived in my city’s UPS hub last week, then went back out to a hub 90 minutes from me, then got handed to USPS for final delivery

Anyway, mine looks exactly like Falfreak’s. Same filing/ painted over area on each side, indicative of cam swap. Barrel looks pristine.
Mine came with a 13 round Mousetrap magazine.

Mine is even in the same serial number range - 75C3xxx

I plan to strip this down this weekend, strip the paint off everything and decide on how to refinish then. I’ll replace every spring in it, with the goal of carrying it soon.

I was wanting a 'round-pin' alloy for the look, but this will work.

Blast away! They’re solid.

Bryan at Aim Surplus said this batch came from Italy. I wonder if there’s any way to find out what agency had these?

Who has the best price on the 15 round mags??

I'd send it to Novak's for low mount sights (which slide will then have to be refinished). I'd also have new springs replaced through out pistol if you plan to carry. Maybe even an extended thumb safety. Trigger job, reliability package possibly. Decent turn around time & cost. Grips, your call. Novak's has been my go to BHP shop since early 80's. Here is my early 90's Spec Ops BHP that doesn't get much attention these days, but a keeper obviously. Keep us posted on your decided upgrades.

Here’s where I’m at:

I tore it down, sprayed with Break-Free and the paint came right off the spot where they pressed in the new cam.
So I sanded out the grind marks and thinking on a finish.

I’m thinking Cerakote Graphite Black for the frame.
I have a set of repro wood stocks and a Wolff spring kit on the way.

What safety is that? The ambi, one-sided?

I believe it is. But it's been modified ie shortened since it doesn't protrude out enough to add a right side safety lever. All I can remember is I said I want an extended strong side safety and that's what Kurt Wickman (then Manager & BHP gunsmith at Novak's) added. I can't remember if Browning made a strong side safety like this one or not? Been quite awhile ago.

Thanks...that's what I was thinking about doing myself. The 'commercially' made extended safeties out there are ridiculous in price, and I don't want an ambi.

I was going to do nothing to it and just carry it, but the frame 'paint' coming off triggered a few 'required' upgrades! I hate when that happens!
I put a few rounds through it with the surplus mag it came with- I grabbed a handful of old Wolff steel case and some Blazer Brass 124g. It’s a shooter:

I ended up ordering one of these today.  My buddy just got a real nice one yesterday with the round cam.  I'm thinking the oval cam was on the very earliest alloy hi powers (1975) then the switched to the round.  Anyone know for sure?

Unknown for sure, but very possible. The story goes that the alloys were initially requested by another nation, and these came from Italy, so 🤷🏽

My frame is done- creakoted. I had ordered some repro wood stocks from Sarco, but they were not milled correct and block the thumb safety, so they’re going back. I’ll stick with the original plastic ones, maybe do a faux wood paint.

I tried to strip the paint off the side with aircraft stripper- it did absolutely nothing to that paint! I’ll give the sandblasted a go tomorrow.

That’s in there with the majority of other alloys I’ve seen- 215 and 245 prefixes… I think they were dated to ‘79 and then ‘85.

It doesn't look too bad as far as deep or significant metal wear- The paint is worn off in spots or poorly applied previously - but could be carefully cleaned up and repainted.  There are mil paint jobs on HPs that are not great or redone in armories rather sloppily and can be made to look better.

Going to shoot it tomorrow. Only thing I know right now are the sights have to go. I hate black on black target sights. Got a Colt Series 70 repro that need them shitcanned too. Regardless, should be nice weather to some blasting

It's interesting that some of these '70s alloy guns have the oval pin the frame.  I have  '80, '81, and '82 alloys with the round pin.  If anyone else wants to share their mid to late 70s info, maybe we can pin down when this change took effect.

Edit- quick google found some posts from 1911 forum- sounds like the cam pin change was in '79.  And the earliest alloy frame guns were '75.  With no reports I could find of alloy guns from '76-'78
