N600000 1979-1980
N700000 1980
According to Smith and Wesson Catalog 4th Ed. So I’d say 1979

Thank you @Reverend_Jim

On a slightly different topic, for sentimental reasons I would like to have a 629 which was made in 1981. Can you help me zero in on a serial number range please? If it turned out to be a 1980 gun, that would be ok.

Thanks!

Best can do is N800000  1980-1983. Smith and Wesson Serial Numbers are hard to nail down if you’re lucky enough to get the box it came in it will have a date code on it.

Strangely N900000 are listed as 1982-1986

You can email s&w customer service and they will give you a date. Sometimes it's a solid date 4/1/24 other times on older stuff it might just be 1973-74.
