I was buying a STI off of a client today and he pulled out this 1911 and gave me a story about it being his late Grandfather's. I looked up the serial number and it dates to 1935 but what throws me off is the National Match slide. I can't find any info on National Match 1911s being made in 1935. He claims the gun is all original except for a bad refinish and the beavertail as far as he knows. He wants $1000 and I'm leaning closer to $500 because of the finish and beavertail. ETA: I forgot, the hammer isn't original either.
My question are: 1. Were National Match guns made in 35 or is this not the original slide? 2. What would be a fair price to pay?      |

"C" prefix indicates commercial model IIRC. By no means an "expert" but think a National Match would have adjustable rear sight of some sort. Maybe go to Colt Forum& "lurk around" a bit?

Gun probably is as shipped from Colt.

Thank you for this. He said they discovered the gun after his grandfather died so they couldn't exactly get any info out of him on it. Nobody knew that he even had it. It was rusted and pitted when they found it and he took it to a local shop here that obviously did a bad job on the refinish. I'll talk to the guy who is interested in buying it and see if he is interested in restoring it. Thank you |

Yank the beavertail and fit a Colt grip safety and hammer and it'll be close. The frame ears haven't been trimmed to fit.
Not bad for a 1935 National Match, but not great, either. Close to as-shipped profile, but nowhere near $1,000. Maybe $800 if you're generous -- the pitting isn't bad, functionally, but Turnbull will charge you a pretty penny to get it nice. I'll bet it shoots just as straight as the day it left Colt's. |

I don’t think that checkered lanyard loop mainspring housing is original to that either.
That’s just worth what someone is willing to pay, which isn’t much |

I told the customer of mine that I had in mind to walk away. Now I'm back on the hunt for a very original pre-war 1911.
