With S&Ws promotion going on, I am thinking of picking up another J frame. I am curious if the current offerings are good to go. I know Lipseys came out with their version of the 442/642, but those are impossible to find anywhere, plus after rebate I can get either a 442 or 642 for just over $400. So, with that said, any reason not to get another Jframe?

They are good to go with no hillary hole. I got a 442 for my birthday last year. Been carrying it every day since January 2023.

OP wants to know whether a 442 is worth the money.

Yes.

I bought TWO.

Yes. Just add Apex duty/carry spring kit for an excellent trigger.

I got one in December right before they announced the Lipsey versions

Its a fine pocket blaster. Shoots a bit left for me but I cant really decide if its the gun or if its the way Im holding it

Still pretty accurate for a pocket blaster

Great option for something simple to toss in your pocket on occasion.

That’s still good shooting.

The classic pocket gun. I just about stole mine - got it used ( Hillary hole unfortunately) with two speedloaders, 3 boxes of factory ammo, for $350 out the door. Between the ammo and speedloaders I figure I only paid $250 for the gun !
Mine shoots a hair left  also, but still can give me an adequate accuracy for the intended use. When I try to shoot steel at 50 yards ( obviously far outside the typical expectation) I do have to hold off quite a bit to hit center

I think snubbies are a bit dated as far as being the only gun you carry but I also think everyone should have one as an option in their rotation. I opted for the 340PD because .357 and because it weighs nothing. It is a great option to just toss in a pocket to have something on quick runs. I don’t see snubs ever going away because of their simple utility.

Any good deals out there? I was tapped out when Brownells had one for 389 at Christmas

I’m happy with my 442.
ETA: It’s not the right tool for all occasions, but it’s perfect for some.

Check gunbroker. The firearms market is pretty soft right now and there is a glut of inventory. I’ve seen some really good deals on there recently. I picked up a DW Specialist for four hundred under the typical list price.

Being able to walk around with the gun in your hand while in your pocket and shoot it if necessary is definitely one of its strongest points.  The classic example is you can't walk through the average parking garage with most guns in your hand, but you can grasp your J frame in your coat pocket and nobody is going to see it and you can empty the cylinder without having to remove it (unless you set your jacket on fire ).

^ This. It's certainly perfect for that.

I picked up a 642 very cheaply just before ChiCom-19, so cheaply that I sent it off to Cylinder & Slide for work that many told me I was crazy to spend money on.

Very simple:
1. Action Job
2. Smooth, polish, radius trigger face
3. Install an XS tritium Big Dot front sight

I ended up with a 360J because I found a stupid good deal on one, but o would have preferred the 340 for the hammerless option.

A lot of people seem to disregard how much of an impact on accuracy that a good trigger and sights can make, especially with the little snubs which are in my opinion one of the most difficult types of firearms to use. You often hear snubbies referred to as gut guns but that’s not really true, they are much more capable than that.

I like the 360J. I almost picked up a used one locally awhile back, the price was really good but I didn’t move on it fast enough, someone else bought it while I was still messaging the guy.

My 340PD and my 640 Pro. Both have excellent sights and Apex triggers.

I think every gun collector should have at least one. They are great little guns and easily customizable to the shooter with different grips, spring kits, some with actual sights.

My 442 Pro is always in my pocket when home.
On the current 642/442s the dash number designates ILS and +P rated.  The No Dash are non +P rated and no ILS.
-1, no ILS
-2, has the ILS

You need one OP!

I have one of the 442 Pro models (No Hillary hole) and it's perfect for pocket carry when I can't carry my usual pistol on the belt. Also not a bad BUG to have in dicey areas. I carry mine in a Simply Rugged Pocket Protector loaded with wad cutters.

My 642 Pro with CT 405 grips & 148gr WC makes for a good rule 1 pocket gun, by itself in the house or bug out and about.
