Buddy inherited this from his father, doesn’t know anything about it & neither do I. Ya’ll got anything?? Possible date of manufacture, value etc?

Based on the box, 70s or 80s; you can look up the date of manufacture on Ruger’s website.
They are the tanks of the (DA) revolver world. I have a 2-3/4” stainless Service-Six (fixed sight) from that era and my buddy had one the same as that one: blue 6”. We shot those things a lot. I don’t think it’s possible to wear one out unless one were to continuously shoot crazy hot handloads through it. |

Had a 200th Year version of that in stainless back in the '70s.
Feel a lot better in the hand with Pachmayr grips. Easiest revolver to field strip ever made. The one revolver I wish I had never sold. |

Most probably reloads…and 1975 on the box.
Those Speer 148gr JHPs (which I think are no longer made) were some interesting bullets: the copper jacket is has a straight-wall/cup-shape which leaves the entire lead nose exposed. The theory back in the day was the extra exposed lead would enhance expansion. |

The Ruger Six Series revolvers are great.
Supposedly Ruger lost money on every one they sold so came up with the simpler to make GP-100/SP-101 designs. |

I got my 6" blued Security Six used almost 40 years ago and it was beat to hell then but mechanically fine. I still have it, it still shoots great, and I shoot it better than any revolver I've ever tried. It was comparable in size to the K-frame Smiths but much stronger and more robust. Ruger should offer a Security Six with the GP-100 grip system. I'd buy one in a heartbeat.

Fantastic utilitarian revolvers. I have two 4"s one blue one stainless.
Pachmayr gripper grips are great on them. |
|

[#10]
Mine is a Speed Six stainless and I carried it a lot. Only thing it ever killed was a couple copperheads while out groundhog hunting. That snake shot messes them up at 4 ft.

My first revolver was a security-6 with a 4" barrel. Great gun, I miss it. Funny thing, my last revolver was a stainless security-6 with a 3" barrel. I miss that one too!

OP, not sure when yours was made.
I got mine in 1982 and it was in a yellow and black box. Mine is stainless, don't know if they used different color boxes for blued vs. stainless. |

Great guns, my 1st handgun was a 4" Security Six.

It's basically a S&W Model 19, not as sexy to look at, but also not ammo sensitive.

I've had two 6 inch models that I sold when I discovered I like the 4 inch version better.
Now have a SS 200 yr I bought used in 2005, and a blued one I bought new in 1978. To field strip all that is needed is a cartridge case to unscrew the grip screw. From there it's easy peasy to strip using parts that were disassembled. Very easy to upgrade with a spring kit. Both are on my "never sell" list. I do have a 4 inch GP 100 for when I feel the need for 357 +P. No such thing as 357 +P, just what I call my full power handloads. |

Well, I like the way that they look, but I like their target grips better. OP, I have a 4" blued one like yours and a 6" stainless with target grips. and a 2 3/4" Speed Six in 9mm, all great guns These guns are geting up there in price. They ae built like tanks and will last a good long time if you take care of them. |

Fired a few thousand .357s and tens of thousands of .38s. Never a problem. OP, no doubt they are reloads, two boxes even have Speer stickers on them. I’d pull the bullets, dump the powder and reload with a known amount of powder. No sense risking a classic revolver. Enjoy! |

First handgun I bought.
The blue is almost worn off. I put well over 22k rounds through it with 55% being 38 special and 45% 357 magnum. 38’s were fun to shoot and it was common to put 100 rounds or more in a range session. My uncle gave me half of a 5 gallon bucket of gas-checked semi wadcutters that took me a couple of summers to go through. Just about every load I made was predictable and consistently accurate. Towards the end, it was trivial to shoot bumblebees on dandelions with it. Awesome trigger that I took for granted until I started buying other handguns that needed trigger work. I will never get rid of it. |

Got a stainless 6" Security Six from when my aunt passed. I shot about 50 rds yrs ago,I seriously doubt she probably put a cylinder through it. I don't have to box, but it's in a case in my safe. Has Ruger medallion rubber grips similar to pachmyer but no finger grooves. Need to zero it in one day. Its minty.
ETA. Mine looks just like Falcons above...just 6". |

Based on the serial number, there was a change in the grip frame around S/N 151, 000, ie. mid 80s. Grips are more readily available for the later grip frames. I got one within the last few years and found some Pachmayer rubber grips, it's great.

I regret selling the stainless 6 inch SS I had. I paid under $400 for it 10 years ago. Now most Security Six revolvers are selling in the $500 to $800+ range.
https://www.gunbroker.com/Revolvers/search/completed?Keywords=Ruger%20Security%20Six&PageSize=48&Sort=9&View=1&Timeframe=1 I still have these 2 and recently added rubber grips to both. Wood is prettier but they are easier to shoot with rubber grips. Attached File I would like to add a 4inch blued or stainless. The Ruger GP100 Match Champion is the closest thing to a Security Six that Ruger currently offers. https://ruger.com/products/gp100MatchChampion/models.html |

Great gun keep it and enjoy shooting it. Don’t trust the reloads at all. Pull them apart just don’t shoot them. Good luck.

I had a 6" stainless years ago, and traded it off. Ugh...f-ing dumbass. Been on the lookout for another one in decent enough shape since.
Just the other day, my LGS had a nearly immaculate 6" blued, with the factory rubber grips. Having just blown most of my money on a .357 levergun, I had to put that rascal on layaway, but I did so with a quickness. |

I picked up a stainless electro penciled Speed Six from Bud's guns two or three years ago.
Grips were beat but and the rest has a bit of holster wear/minor scratches but good to go after replacing the grips. Supposed to be be a re-import from the Australian police. Paid 425-450, don't remember. |

I live in the house that my wife's grandparents bought in the early '60s. Her grandfather died in 1985. In the closet for the master bathroom, was a old MTM case card box with 30 reloaded 38 special rounds, 15 empties and five missing. It still had the sticker with the load data written on it and that's where it is today. Once I showed it to my wife and explain what it was, she probably likes leaving it right where he left it. It's amazing it sat in the same spot for over 25 years after he passed before I moved here. And YES, I have looked EVERYWHERE wondering if there was a loaded J-frame, waiting to be found. |

Smoothest double action revolver trigger I ever felt was an old security six that belonged to a fellow employee I took to the range to qualify him. It wasn't light, but absolutely smooooooth.

[#41]
I've had two of them and they are wonderful pistols. I replaced the small stocks with the Pachmayer rubber one and it made a huge difference in the controllability of the gun.
The first one was stolen from my apartment in 1983 or so and the second one I sold to a buddy on the condition he sell it back if he got tired of it. Well, he got a divorce and his wife got custody of my gun. |

I had two of the Six-Series revolvers back in my younger days. A Speed-Six and a Security-Six, both 2 3/4in guns. If you shoot a lot of heavy duty .357 then these are the revolver for you. I sold both of them after I found the S&W model 19 family of revolvers and fell for them.
