We are going to be doing a ruck in the Uwharrie on 3/9. Meeting up at 9:45am for a 10am step off. We’re looking to do a couple of things with this event.

1. Build camaraderie. Shared experiences help bond people together, and getting out into nature is one of the best ways.

2. I’d like to find an area a little less traveled than the King’s Mountain Point so we could set up a land nav course and not worry about people taking our markers.

Our meet up point is still TBD. Looking at either the Birkhead Mountain Wilderness area or down between Candor and Wadeville. I’ll update when we decide which area. I wanted to get this out there so there is plenty of time to get it on your calendars.

If anyone has some knowledge of those areas, feel free to chime in.

If you don’t know what a ruck entails, the standard is a 35lb ruck with rifle or a 45lb ruck carried for 6 miles in 2 hours or less.

Think you can’t do it?

Don’t worry about it. Come out with a backpack and whatever you think you can carry and give it a go. Find out that you can do more than you think you can.

Come out and test yourself. Maybe fail and learn where you need to get better. Maybe meet some great new friends.

If you want to ruck a straight trail instead of a loop, I can be there to shuttle people back to the starting area.

One day….

You’re in there a good bit. Are there areas that aren’t heavily traveled we can go or is it all pretty well covered with people?

Id think that area around River Road in the map @mitchellh posted should be pretty good, but I haven't hiked it before.

Honestly most of my time hiking there is on the training ground trails back and forth between trucks The few times I've actually hiked on trails in the open national forest they've been pretty quiet.

Sweet!

I’d like to have you do another land nav class. I’m hoping we can find a way to set up a course out there.

A basic individual course shouldn't be difficult to set up.  Really wouldn't need a large amount of real estate either. . . Unless you want it to.

The original plan was to do a recon yesterday and pick a location.

Unfortunately, work called so I’m planning to head down next Saturday to drive around and check out some new to me trail heads.

Went and did a recon today.

Tried a couple of different trail heads. The Wood Run Trailhead and Jumping Off Rock trailhead were packed due to races. Continued on up and hit the Robbins Branch Trailhead in the Birkhead Mountain Wilderness.

JACKPOT

Off the beaten path a bit and since it’s a Wilderness area, we can do more than just walk along the trail.

Trying to determine the legality/practicality/optics for rucking with rifles, but this is where we will be meeting on 3/9.

I am working on getting us some topo maps in 1:25,000 of the trail systems.

I hadn't heard of that one, looks like a neat app. I'll have to play with it some.

The biggest downside so far is if I want to print in anything except 8.5x11, I have to pay for it.

But I can set the grids and scale to what I want so we can use them for land nav purposes

Saw my chiro last week

May need to see him again this week

The crazy thing is, when I’m rucking 2-3 days a week my back is fine. As soon as I get out of the habit, I have issues

Need to stay in the habit
