Hey gang!  Son just went to BMT and he is putting Charleston on his dream sheet.  If anyone has the time would you please provide some input of the area.  He and his wife love the outdoors.  How is the area pros and cons?  Thanks!

What is his AFSC?

JBC is in a very busy part of the Charleston metro area. Traffic can be heavy and apartments expensive.

Being a young airman he is wise to just stay in the dorms.

He will love the beaches and everything the lowcountry has to offer.  You will enjoy visiting him there.

I am IG up the road at Shaw. I hope to never meet your son in a professional manner. šŸ˜‚

I grew up in the lowcountry.

The area is growing fast, population is booming. It's getting very peopley.

With that said, Charleston is a great place for getting into history - lots of it here. As for outdoorsy stuff, there's salt & freshwater fishing. Lots of water, which would make having a boat worthwhile. The Francis Marion National Forest is nearby.

I used to do some hiking and camping when I lived in the hills of north central PA. When I got to Charleston (I was USAF) in 1986 I got a topographical map to see what the prospects of playing in the woods looked like. That map showed lots of swamp (they don't call it the Lowcountry for nothing). It may feel familiar, being from FL.
