Edit 1/10/2024
See below link to register. Please get signed up as soon as possible in order to facilitate our planning and logistics: Practiscore Sign up Edit: It looks like we are a go on the 17th. Tentatively we are getting exclusive use of one of the Pima County public ranges. Not sure if it will be Tucson or Ajo range yet. I originally asked for Ajo but it was suggested today in a call with the county that the Tucson range may be available. I'll let you know ASAP which range. I will have a registration link up on Practiscore soon as we solidify which range. ---------------OP--------- All, I apologize that we tried to get something going in Arizona before, and it unfortunately fell on its face. I'd like to try and get something up and going again. I'll be in Tucson over the 17th and 18th of February and more than willing to dedicate an entire day to running an event for you all. Is there a preference on which day? Would probably be a hike in the morning followed by one of several options (which I'll poll for a predominant preference next week) for the afternoon. No cost or ultra low cost for the event. Poll to follow. |

Oh, I'm interested....if it was 25 years ago. Free bump in the meanwhile.

I'll share with our private group. I know some of them have talked about it.

Will attend either day. Preference on Saturday for return travel time.
Southern Nevada chapter is in with a few. Several come from N AZ to do events with us also. Will spread the word.
Saturday preference Analog pathfinding/land nav or shooting pistol/rifle would be excellent. |
I wouldn't say I'm a gun nut... but I'd consider extreme enthusiast.
Either date would work since tucson is only a couple hours away.
Tentatively in +1. I would say 100% but I am a flake. |
OK all- since it appears we have interest, I'll give you a definite date in the next few days, but it appears most likely it will be Saturday. Follow-on question, which I'll add a poll for;
Hike + full day small arms training Hike + full day land navigation Hike + four hours land nav + four hours small arms Other (Write in choice). This can be anything from the Pioneer Task Book/Pioneer skills, however if it involves extensive movement of equipment and specialized safety personnel, such as the waterborne operations training, there may be a minimal cost involved. Typically somewhere around 30-50 dollars. As far as the other options, anyone who does the hike and passes at the 6 mile standard, may participate in all other training free of charge (or cost sharing depending on the venue, typically about $5 for the day, which goes towards our insurance). That includes us providing ammunition and weapons as needed for the shooting portion. If you want to skip the hike, that is fine, but we will charge you something like actual cost of ammunition and/or maps, plus 10% if you want to use our weapons and ammo, or a flat rate of $20 for the day with your own gear. Does that sound reasonable to everyone? |

I'm in the Phoenix area. I voted "other" with the "other" being solo/small unit Escape and Evasion.

Damn! - I'd be there if it wasn't for the 2500 mile trip. Would like to see something like this in the northeast / NH.
What's the hike like?
Elevation gain/ terrain? And are we hiking to the training spot? As in, needing to carry all our gear on the hike? |
Small squad tactics is my vote.

It's the weekend after Cola Northwest, but I might be in. Depends if I die in the frozen tundra or not.

View Quote Current hike plan is pretty flat really. You should carry all your gear for the hike, with a pack no less than 35lbs (not including water). There will be extra water available at the end to refill. |

I tried to get something going in CA but was plagued by lack of interest and then getting a job that had me at sea most of the year, and until recently, not in a predictable fashion. One of my buddies lives in Tucson, so seeing him plus doing this would be a good reason to go and I am scheduled to be off that weekend. He might want to participate as well. The exercise in question was not instruction in tactics, nor were the students conducting ambushes. They were conducting a SAR exercise in which the had very limited information, and were ambushed by a well positioned lone shooter to force the student in a leadership role to make a decision and later justify that decision. It was a mechanism for creating stress and forcing action, not instruction in tactics. |

I expect to be working this Saturday but otherwise count me as interested. I'm about two hours east of Tucson and will make the drive for overnight stuff if it aligns with my work schedule.

I just went by his description of “two patrol/ambush exercises with APC.” I do understand your emphasis on mission planning and leadership and decision making. I just saw his quote and I laughed because I had just seen you compare APC curriculum to BSA Handbook topics. I thought, IA drills aren’t in the handbook. Lol. (They probably should be). |

Signed up. The only weapon and ammo I would need to borrow is a shotgun and shotgun ammo. I do not presently have one and only have a very small amount of shotgun ammo types required. I didn't realize that it would be so far from Tucson, though.

Are there more details about the class listed somewhere? I could not find much at all. It appears there are options for the three parts but I can not tell for sure. I would probably be in for the land nav. range and quals. but hiking with a pack for my 73 year old knees is out, lol.

In the description of the event it lists the starting time for each portion. You can join for any combination of events. All of these classes will be very basic. As if you have had very little exposure to the subject matter. We will adjust on the fly a little for individual skill levels. |

I got it. If we wanted to get things signed off in the task book, do we have to have the latest edition or are older ones still suitable (I have the September 2020 edition)?

The original task book is probably close enough to work for now, but I'd recommend picking up the current one at some point. There were some significant changes to requirements for various ratings in the second edition. Changes since then have been minor. |
