The dam I want to build in one of the valleys on my property will have to be about 30 feet high. Anyone deal with larger stock pond dam projects?

Is that going to be 30 above grade? Or how deep you want the pond to be.
I think we dont need engineering until over 15', but It can be deeper behind the dam. |

Given the narrow V shape of the valley, a little bit of excavation ought to allow that staying under 15' for dam height, right? Bonus, I need to pull a bunch of stone out of the ground for another ongoing project anyways. |

That is how I plan to do one. Our soil is mostly clay and rock, so I planned use what I dig out to build the dam.

I've built several ponds but never anything even close to a 30'. How many acre/ft. will be behind the damn?
ETA: also what will be the span of the damn at the top? |

Good question though remember you will need to excavate a few feet of material at the base of the damn before laying in the new damn. Otherwise water will run under it though the natural soil and eventually erode it enough to take out the damn (if it manages to hold any water at all). |

ETA: also what will be the span of the damn at the top? 15 acre/feet. I poorly phrased this early on. The dam needs to provide for a 24 foot depth at the deepest point behind it. Excavating down 15 feet ought to let the dam be much shorter than 30 feet, right? |

I thought that they were more for strength. I hadn't considered leakage under. |
