This morning while rabbit hunting in the Elgin area I noticed more than half of the ant holes I saw some critter scratched and sometimes dug in and around the ant hole.  The digging would only be about 2 to 5 inches deep.  These are the big red ants that usually do not create a mound but do clear all of the vegetation around the hole.  For most of these I did not see any tracks.  When there were tracks I am sure it was calf tracks.

What critter would be doing this?

I do not think there are any bears or turkeys in the area.
