I'm burnt out on Colorado, been that way for many years, but this weeks committee hearings on nine, yes NINE new bills that are all infringements on the 2A, have kicked me over the limit of what I can tolerate. I pay a fortune to live here, even though I live in the mountains far, far away from any major city.

I need to move. Not immediately, but very soon. Probably would be looking into a year, two years, but no later than three years down the road. I need to finish my college degree (2nd one) before we go. I'll be done in a year. The new degree is in Cyber Security, with a focus on digital forensics and cyber law.

I am skilled in firefighting, sawyer/lumberjacking (though I'm hesitant to go back to that), plant and tree health, greenhouse operations, pesticide science, disease and insect control, and forestry. My wife is a certified Vet tech with about 20 years of experience and small animal surgery experience. I think we can both find jobs, but y'all tell me.

I'm looking in areas in the mountains. I have no (absolutely no, none, zip, nada) desire to live near any major city, let alone in one. So I've been looking at areas like Lava Hot Springs, Soda Springs, etc. Gotta have trees, gotta be in the mountainous areas. We are accustomed to life in those areas and are very self-sufficient.

My question is do you all have any ideas for areas that fit that bill, and what is the job market like for our skillsets? My wife has a remote job she can take with her anywhere, but I really need to develop a couple of leads in the next year or so.

Not a lot of time for a detailed reply but, check out Riggins, Salmon and/or Idaho City areas. Salmon would be my guess for a good fit for you.

JK, she can't. She consults remotely. She has two jobs right now, one in person, one virtual. She can take the virtual job anywhere. She'd just market herself if/when we move.

I looked into Salmon, that looks tempting. I'll check out the rest later. Sounds like we're gonna take a road trip up there this summer to check it out and do some camping and fishing.

Also, how much snow does the Pinehurst/Smelterville area usually get?

I really like that area a lot from the google map images.

No stranger to snow, we get about 2ft-3ft annually where I live. Sometimes all in one storm.

Eta found it. 40-some inches of snow, almost 30 inches of rain. Yikes.

30 inches of rain scares you?  I moved from 56in, feels like I moved to a desert.  We get 100ish in. of snow.

Yeah, sucks, cuz I love where I live (northern CO rockies, 9000 ft elevation) I love my house, my neighbors, my region (fishing hunting dirt bike trails shooting, etc)

Everyone in my neighborhood in “conservative” colorado springs has been replaced by liberal transplants from illinois, cali and most recently kansas city, the K.C. Folks couldnt wait to tell me they had to get out kansas city , and come to a place more “tolerant”.

I love the outdoors, hunting here etc  as well

Had a neighbor move in a couple of miles away, built a very nice house on a piece of land. The very first thing they did is put one of those god damned fucking signs out that says "In this house we believe: love is love, housing is a right, clean water, clean air, blah blah blah blah".

Plenty in Sandpoint, and few in downtown CDA neighborhoods.

Sandpoint and surrounding areas also have tons of those “love lives here” Idaho shaped signs.

Never seen one in The Benewah.  I don't venture much into the dens of inequity.

Cant get away from them everywhere ,  at least you guys got a solid R state government.

If I had to live elsewhere, I'd strongly consider Salmon.

I'd imagine Soda Springs and Lava Hot Springs' proximity to Pocatello mean they're pretty heavily Mormon, but I don't actually have any clue.

ETA - The silver valley is pretty depressed. If you end up this way, make sure you find a place on the north side of 90. There's less lead in the soil on the north side.

Southeast and Eastern Idaho are heavily Mormon.  Lava Hot Springs is a tourist area in the summer and very crowded.  Soda Springs does not have a lot of trees, high desert.  Swan Valley might fit your needs a little more.  In Eastern Idaho the mountains can be covered with trees but the valleys are usually dry and either farmland or rocky/lava flows.   Areas outside Idaho Falls will allow you to live in a small town and still be close to services.   There is also western Wyoming at the Idaho Border by Swan Valley.

I know your pain.  I left the Denver Metro back in 2019.  Took about a year to adjust (just like moving to any new place) but have ZERO regrets.  Best of luck.

Sand Point and CDA are crawling with Commie fags…. I knew very few actual Conservatives when I lived there. Lots of cults and folks with personality problems living up in the hills and out away from town-it’s easier to hide your particular brand of screwed up.

I think the "Love Lives Here" thing is connected to the SPLC.

there is a lot of demand in the forestry industry, specifically even the forest nursery industry. Many private greenhouses have shut down in the past few years due to owners aging out. Not enough trees are being grown in Idaho annually to be planted on Idaho timberlands, a good portion are imported every year from WA, OR and Canada nurseries.

Start a nursery if you have the skills, there is definitely a niche for it. UI has a funded internship program for individuals looking to start nurseries every summer to help get folks hands on experience and network with other local and regional nurseries as well.

If I were to move again I would go far north or far east in Idaho. Stay far away from the entire Boise area as the traffic is ridiculous. I really like the northern Idaho area around Bonners Ferry or if you want something more central Idaho I like the Stanley/Challis/Salmon area but the Stanley area is a tourist area during nice weather. The wife loves it here in Nampa so this is where we stay but we get away as often as we can. But anything is better than the peoples republic of washington.

That's where we're gonna look. We're gonna try and take a trip out there this summer, we'll see how it goes with the new baby coming this month.

The way I figure, the rough plan is right now, is sell our grossly inflated value house and land here in CO, buy 25 acres or so in the mountains near St. Maries, then get a prefab installed on a slab.

Question - are basements a thing in Idaho? I know it's hit or miss in other states. CO definitely is a basement state.

My wife's grandma is the only person I know without a basement. But she has tons of living space and it's just her.

We split them with another family, erected a half for ourselves 30x56', traded off a half, still have another half that I will probably sell.
