My wife and I are officially no longer subjects of King Jelly Belly in the Worker's Paradise of Illinois. So now I need to find a place to shoot and hopefully some people to shoot with, within an hour of Hartsville.
While it's true that I'm a refugee of Illinois, I'm a good, red-blooded Yankee that escaped to TN, really. I mainly like shooting ARs and Glocks, I shoot other stuff as well. I have an LMT AR-10 that I have shot out to 640 yards. I have some steel 2/3 IPSC targets that I like to set up a course of fire with and shoot against the clock. I haven't pulled the trigger on a live round in at least 18 months, so my first time or three out won't be pretty. Any leads for a newcomer? Thanks in advance. |

(But it’s my like 10 min from the house lol. Also, welcome to TN! From Vermont myself, went in the Navy, got out, and moved down here as I had family in the area. 30 years or so and I’m still here. I would never and will never move back north again. |

I will miss my old "home range" the Racine County Line Rifle Club just a little north of the Cheddar Curtain. You have a lot of freedom there. It will be great get out and shoot again, it's been way too long. Hopefully my 5.45 mags that won't run with Tula "poly coated" ammo will still work with 7N6. |

I used to have a membership to the Racine County Line Club. I got stationed in Wisconsin for a couple years when I was in the service. That was a neat rifle club. |

Middle TN: Fuck it, Strategic Edge range in Chapel Hill. @Arowneragain knows all about it.

OP - Next time you have some time off and know about it a few days in advance, we could meet over at Strategic Edge and show you around and do some shooting.
Chapel Hill is about 1:20 away from you. Dead Zero is going to be about 1:40 from you. And until you find something closer, you're more than welcomed to come here (my house) and shoot. Yeah, it's ~1;40 away, but I have various berms out to 500 yards. I realize the distance kills that as a long-term solution but it might help scratch the itch in the short term. |

Welcome to TN from another refugee from the great moral wasteland known as IL....
I've found many of the folks who are coming to TN are bringing very conservative values with them-there are a few lefties, but mostly folks who want to live in a free, conservative, moral state. TN is all that. Can't help with the shooting areas, since I made sure to move someplace rural enough, and with enough land, to shoot off my deck. I can 'go to the range' in my slippers if the weather is right. :) Larry |

My homies
Hey Merlin, I saw you posted about being over-run with hickory....... Is there any way I could come over & saw a downed hickory up into lengths I need ? I don't need much, I just want about half of my Tacoma's bed size..... I plan on using it for BBQ & I want to try some chunks larger than what can be bought in bags from Homeless Depot..... & I want to try some longer thick planks out I had some set aside but my wife stole it for our wood-burning fireplace..... |

Welcome. You have already got all the info but I will give another vote for Strategic Edge. A little bit of a drive but one of the nicer ranges in middle TN.
|
|
|
I have a lot of odds and ends to take care of at the new house, That will take up the next couple of weekends, after that I want to head to the range, I guess I'll start at the Strategic Edge, at an 1:20 from home it is the same distance as the RCLRC was. I was hoping for something closer, but whatever.
I want to see if 7N6 will work in my old C-products mags, the springs are shot and you can'tbuy replacement springs and normal AR mag springs are too wide. The Tula "poly coated" rounds won't work in them, too much friction. The Tula worked fine in a friend's AK-74, but the cheapass didn't want to buy the rest that I have. |

Perhaps we can have some TN Hometown Forum get togethers. For a while in the 2004-10 Era, the IL HTF was very active and had a lot of get togethers, some to shoot, others just to get together, BS and swap gear and parts. I would be happy to host one at my house but it would just be a BS/swap meet. I would like to get to know my fellow "firearms enthusiasts" in my new home state. |

Welcome home, out of all my duty stations this is my favorite and will be my last. You'll have to pull me out of Tennessee in a pine box
Lots of great people here, and plenty of public land for hunting and trapping if that's your thing. The only piece of advice I have is to enjoy freedom and get a silencer on order while wait times are low, and talk to Merlin if you enjoy working with walnut If you need anything or have questions don't be afraid to ask |

Sounds awesome !!! My Dad is visiting this weekend & will probably leave Sunday morning..... I'll text you & let you know when I can be there....... I don't need much hickory; Pretty much all I need can be cut with my Stihl chainsaw.... Thanks !!!! |

Former FIB'er (IYKYK) here, also....
Welcome to the Republic of Shooting stuff! Interestingly, I met the President of the new club I joined and he is a refugee from Massachusetts. Very pro 2A. I have a bud that retired from where I worked and he retired to far eastern TN. He is a New Yorker that passionately loves guns. My siblings still live in IL (very pro 2A) and they are considering coming down when they retire. I moved from IL to VA in 1996 and thought I would never have to be anywhere else. Unfortunately, in just 20 years, it went from being pro 2A to becoming a Lib commie haven (the influx of NJ dems to NoVA was the worst). Hopefully, all the transplants coming here, from wherever they came from, vote properly to Keep Tennessee, Tennessee! Lastly, Make sure you join the Tennessee Firearms Association. |

I want to explore the abandoned nuclear power plant. I understand they try to chase people away, but it's worth a shot. |

Earthsheltered house - a reinforced bunker that even the treehuggers consider to be socially acceptable.
Earthbag house - like an earthsheltered house, but cheaper and easier to DIY. |

Another option for a get together would be here at my place. We're on 22 acres (arowneragain may or may not have been my realtor!) and I put in a nice range that we can shoot pistol or rifle on out to 100 yards. Pics below. I'm about as close to the geographic middle of the state as you can get, within a few miles. We could set up the grill and do dogs and burgers (and beer, or whatever) after shooting, and if anyone is inclined to swim, we have a nice pool as well.
