The range in ABQ has an event on the schedule in October, and still has some space in the one class. https://appleseedinfo.org/schedule/?qstate=NM&state=New%20Mexico Message me if you have any questions |

In hindsight maybe I shouldn't have brought nothing but a 14.5" M4gery, but noooooo I just had to do it with iron sights or not at all. Will I finally swallow my pride and bring a scoped rifle? We'll see. View Quote Hi Pomyluy, Sorry for the delay in reply. It's been a crazy month. Since there already is a KD patch at the National level, it was decided to retire the Texas version as a duplication of effort. HOWEVER, The national KD patch is pretty sweet, and there's a NEW patch you can earn, for hitting Morgan's Shingle at 250 yards ;) |

If you would like any guidance on how to prepare, there are some great documents on the Appleseed website that can help, and of course you're welcome to ask questions here ANY time. How To Prepare for an Appleseed marksmanship Clinic I understand your feelings about the Distinguished designation, I really do. The program considered a few choices before settling on this one, as it is what they felt was the best fit. Perhaps when you've completed a class or two and experienced what it takes to earn it you'll be less uncomfortable with it. I do hope you and your son enjoy the course. |

@DanielleMorgan
Is it overkill to shoot this event with an M1A and M118LR? I'd shoot irons |

It's usually a 3-400 round event shot at 25yds. M80 ball will be more than sufficient. If you can do the rapids with the M1A, and get your patch you'll have my admiration! |

He made it about 2/3 of Saturday and switched to a .22. That thing beat the heck out of him. Mind you, when this program first started the big 30 caliber battle rifles were COMMON. If you wanna, and the range allows centerfire, send a message to your Shoot Boss and check with him. I'm sure it'll be fine. But I recommend a backup rifle. As for me, I save the big bore stuff for Known Distance. |

NGL, I have fired hundreds of thousands rifle rounds in my shooting career, which started in High School, shooting 3-position smallbore, both .22LR and Air Rifle.
I earned my US Army Distinguished Rifleman badge in 2021, with a 10pt Leg at the US Army Small Arms Championship (All Army), and represented the US in multiple International shooting competitions as a member of the All-Guard International Combat Shooting Team, both domestically and overseas. I am a DOE Firearms Instructor. I would consider myself a seasoned, competent Marksman. This 25m event both challenged me and brought me back to the basics. My 12 y/o son ended the shoot with a 136. He was heartbroken to have not earned his Rifleman patch, but I came home from work today to find an AQT taped to the basement wall and him slung up, dry-firing his 10/22. (YES, I have full trust in his ability to safely conduct dry-fire in a safe manner, unsupervised...I left him his rifle with all ammunition in the house safely locked up in my gun room.) He's gonna get that patch next time!!!! |

Awesome.
My son (11) and I shot an event in April. I promised I would buy him his own 10/22 if he shot Rifleman. He got 209. Been waiting on another one, hopefully 2024. |

Shot my First Appleseed April 22nd and 23rd in Slippery Rock, PA.
I qualified every single time we shot for score. I started with my Tikka T1x .22 bolt gun. My first was a 235 and second was a 247 (Distinguished). After that I switched to a borrowed bone stock (but scoped) 10/22 and shot about the same scores (235 to 243). My Tikka is a much better shooting rifle so I shot much better with it but I thought the semi auto would give me an advantage to spend an extra second or three actually aiming since I didn't have to worry about working the bolt. BUT as it turned out it ended up costing me time and points because I was having issues getting the bolt release to actually release the bolt. Two of my 235's were because I never got the last shot off while in the sitting stage. Then on Nov 11th I shot the Rimfire Known Distance Appleseed in Beaverfalls, PA. It took all day to shoot the first AQT but I scored a 45 out of 50 using the TC R/22 that I purchased after my first Appleseed. We finished the first AQT around 4pm and here is starts getting dark around 5pm. BUT we all wanted another crack at it. SO, I pulled out my much loved Tikka T1x again and ended up using my previously determined DOPE to score a 49 out of 50 --the high score for the day! I was quite happy with that but I was really annoyed that the one shot I missed was at the 50 yard line while shooting offhand. I am a 3-position smallbore shooter so this should have been an easy stage to clean but for some reason I just pulled the shot high right but just a little bit. I was also annoyed that I missed the cold bore Morgan's shingle by about 1/2 that was again high right. But other than that, I was quite happy with both Appleseed shoots and had such a good time that I have spearheaded bringing the Appleseed Program to my club...The Oil City Chapter of the Izaak Walton League (Franklin, PA). It is scheduled for late April 2024 and it will be the first Appleseed shoot ever in NW PA. We have room for 30 with 9 people already signed up and we haven't even begun to advertise. |

View Quote This thread reminded me to check to see if Parma dates were posted yet, and it looks like they have a few availabilities for 2024 for both standard 25m appleseeds and a Rimfire KD. Looks like there aren't any centerfire KD's there, but CDA has one listed. Idaho appleseed schedule @broken_reticle Looks like you have time to get your son some more dryfire...and save up for a shiny new 10/22. He was right there, and I have no doubt he can get it with a little more trigger time. |

My son has been shooting with 4H, now I think he wants an Anschutz instead of a 10/22. |
