Anyone know anything about the old aluminum canoes? I remember the canoe rental place in Michigan always had Grumman canoes.

Any reason not to try and find one of those instead of the plastic / composite ones that are so common these days?

I don't mind the weight - it is not something we would be portaging.

Any brands to look for or stay away from?

Thanks!

In the ‘80s we used aluminum canoes on several Boy Scout expeditions (hopping from lake to lake paddling up the connecting rivers).
We were constantly bailing due to leaky rivets.

Keep a tube of RTV handy.

Bought a old 18ft Grumman canoe years ago from a family friend for $300.

Tough as hell and awkward to haul in boats. Especially if the other boat is a 18 footer.
Outdoor carpet on the bottom helps quiet the noise.
Just wish it was a flat ender so we could put a small gas outboard on.

Keep up on the screws and rivets.
Use sealant on the screws. Helps them keep from loosening up.
