If you had $2k for a bird shotgun what would you get?   Should cover quail/dove/pheasant to turkey and geese.

Benelli Super Black Eagle 3 or Beretta A400x.

I’ve got a SBE3 and my buddy has an A400x both will run the entire waterfowl season without cleaning. Super reliable shotguns.

I used to run a Beretta al391 teknys for skeet, sporting clays, and dove and upland bird hunting. And I mean a LOT of all of those and a metric fuckton of shells got run through it.

It never once let me down.

I’m going to be in the market for a new sporting gun soon. I’m planning on a Beretta 400, possibly a Benelli Montefeltro.

Beretta 20 ga depending on how far the shots on geese are. 12 ga if you have to shoot at far distances. The older 390 were very soft shooting guns

Browning/Beretta if you want a gas gun - softer recoil, some additional cleaning required.
Benelli if you want inertia, a little more recoil, less cleaning required.

The A400 models if you want the really nice finish/wood and extra features like the kickoff stock.

The A300 models are like the cheaper, more utilitarian version but they still run and run.

Beretta or Benelli, take your pick.  Whichever feels better in your hands fit wise, that is probably the most important.

I am a Benelli guy, but would not hesitate to use a Beretta (I do have a couple)  No experience with the new Brownings/Winchesters, so can't comment on those.

The Browning Maxus and Maxus II shotguns are the best that I have experienced. Over 10 years of hunting all kinds of game with them, and they have been go to war dependable. Light, smooth shooting, just fantastic shotguns all around.

My dad recently purchased a Beretta A400 Multi-Target. It's more than your $2k limit but it's an awesome shotgun. I have a Browning 725 and am thinking of picking one up too.

Used Berretta 391 for the win. Either 12 or 20

Don't let "used" intimidate you.  These are 100,000 + round guns.

Unless it gets really wet, I only clean mine every other case of shell, and its never let me down.

A400

I have an A400 I’m trying to sell off to buy a SBE3
I fell in love with my buddy’s SBE3

The 3 B’s will treat you well

for upland id buy another 20ga Montefeltro. for waterfowl id say a SX3. i have a SX2 and its 8lbs empty. spending all that money for $1400+ shotguns is meaningless i think

M2 all the things.  Then chop that sucker.  If shotgun is the question, M2 is the answer.

Another vote for the benelli m2, I picked mine up for $800 and it was very very lightly used, they are usually around 1,200 new.

I chose the SBE 3 over the Beretta A400 because of weight and ergonomics. The SBE is lighter, more svelte and fits me better. Love the gun, zero issues. I also have a beretta TX4 which is the same Blink Action as the A400. It’s nice too, but for a hunting gun the benelli I prefer. Either is a good choice though.

Learning how to use shims to set up a shotgun was a game changer.

This is a good answer.  I’m partial to the Benelli, but the Beretta is a very good gas gun.

I would add the Browning A5.  Is Benelli DNA with some nice Browning features.

Doesn’t get any lower maintenance than a Benelli inertia gun.  Real slender and light for carrying around too.

They just don’t seem to get dirty.

I have a Montefeltro, then I got an M2 SBS and pretty much stopped shooting the Monte.  SBSes are AWESOME for actually hunting with.  Lighter, shorter and they don’t get hung up on anything and if you run an optic then accuracy is unaffected.

I told them to lay a Beretta, Browning, and Benelli on the counter. Picked each up and sighted down the barrel, then opened my eyes. The Benelli was right on target and fit me like a glove.  Either are great, just make sure it fits.

I've been using Benelli semi-autos for almost 30 years (it'll be 30 years in January 2024), and cannot recommend them enough.  HOWEVER, with light promotional loads I have owned a few that were not 100% reliable.  With actual hunting loads 100%.

I recently bought a Beretta A300 Ultima Max7, and have been very happy with it too.

As most others have said, any Benelli M1, M2 or M3 or Beretta A300 or A400 is likely to give MANY years of service with minimal maintenance.

I’ll throw my .02 cents in. I’ve only owned/shot the Winchester Super X family of semi-auto shotguns, so of course I’m a bit biased.

Got my first Super X2 in 1998 and ran like a champ until 2021 where I started getting light primer strikes. Hammer spring was shot and the firing pin point had eroded. 12k + rounds took its toll I guess. Never changed anything else on the gun and the gas system still runs like a champ. Never found a light load it wouldn’t fire.

2021 came and I bought the Super X4. Same gas system and similar components but lighter and more ergonomic for me.

They’ve been great guns and would recommend them to anyone!

Beretta A400 Extreme with Kick off.

It is a sweet shotgun for all type of flying objects.

Bought my SX2 in 2003 and it's been an absolute work horse for me.  I recommend replacing the bolt buffer pad about every 2500 rounds of 3.5" or every 5000 rounds of 3".
I'm not sure I can accurately calculate how many rounds i've put through this gun.  over 25,000 and under 50,000.  Snow goose hunting and having an automatic trap thrower can really rack up the rounds.

Do any have a shorter than 14.5 inch length of pull ? I need about 14 inch LOP with shorter arms and cold weather coat. I can't find hardly anything with a shorter LOP. I prefer a O/U but would get a semi if I could find the correct fit .

Benelli’s recoil pads pop off and they have different sizes. At least for the SBE3. I have two pads for that very reason.
