I got the idea from this video. The Tech Prepper.
He has lots of video's on the subject including digital messaging. He goes out and uses it frequently.
It would not surprise me to learn he is on this forum.
Military-Style Radio Manpacks for Civilians - Part I

Military-Style Radio - HF/VHF/UHF Manpack - Part IV
Military-Style Radio - Manpack Crossband Repeater - Part III
Military-Style Radio - The Ultimate SHTF Manpack - Part V
I have since converted two(2) LMR's radio's to man packs. A Yeasu FT8800 and an Anytone UV5888. Both are 2 meter .70 CM.
What I like about it is that I can now take them anywhere, and in any vehicle. Nothing mounted that can be stolen. If the jeep/truck breaks down, I can take the radio with me, no problem.
With the Anytone version I have FRS/GRMS (5W), 2 meter and .70 CM. In my jeep I have a mounted antenna but....I can change and use a J-pole (N9TAX), mag mounts, or a stand alone antenna.
I can use the battery which is a
Bioenno 12v 6amp lithium-ion battery , a 12v Barrel plug, or a battery box like a Goal Zero Yeti 400. I can also recharge the Yeti and the Bioenna battery from the yeti and the yeti can be recharged from solar or a wall plug.
I still have a Yeasu FT60R as a backup, but having the ability to go out at 50 watts is a big deal.
And for those of us who might be worried about EMP, considering the current world events taking place, Manpacks are easily stored in a galvanized metal trash can.
What is your thoughts ?
