The heifer's feed consumption went way up, so we started checking a little closer at night. My middle boy went with the flir and an 870 full of cheap 00, and sure enough, he found this guy. He said when he hit the light the hog faced him. That wasn't a good move for porky.
His cutters are 3", and the tape says he weighs 274#. That might be a little heavy, but he's definitely over 250. This is the biggest boar we've killed in a long while. I've hunted hogs with dogs, shot them at long range, shot big groups at close range with an AR, M14, and lever gun, ran over them with trucks, tractors, 4 wheelers, shredders and discs, but shotgunning them is the most fun IMO.

Tell the kid great job. I don’t know about the most fun. Sticking a 25#’er down to a tree root with a broad head watching him do diddo’s and squealing like he was stuck under a gate was pretty fun to watch.🫣 Running one through the mower conditoner or swather as some people call them was a nasty mess to remove. Not to mention it smoked the belt on the vicon.

Hell yeah! Skin it, quarter it, take the backstrap, make some sausage, ground pork etc. and don't listen to those who tell you eating big boars are nasty. They don't know how to cook them, or they are just rambling on from what they've heard. Keep the tusks too.

I have killed so many that I can tell the decent eating ones by smell. Those people that say that the old boars are good eating have just never eaten good pork. We had a tame barrow hog that got too big because of Covid and not getting him into the slaughter house when he was ready. And he was a little tough and rank eating. Most of the feral hogs I have killed went on the pile to be composted. On the bright side when you compost them properly they grow excellent vegetables.🤠 |
