Nice logs (Page 1 of 2)

Had someone offer up a fallen tree for firewood if we'd come pick it up.  Ended up being some kind of big oak, haven't figured out exactly which one yet (they hybridize), but the first trailer load was just the top, cut up into firewood.  This load was the main trunk; can't bring myself to cut it up into firewood so going to haul it in to the sawmill.  Should be a nice yield of oak lumber for projects!

(I know, I know, nobody cares but nobody around here does either!)

Yup, too nice to burn.  I've got a larch on the fence line that is going to turn into lumber come springtime.

Yeah, that's pretty straight.  You'll get some nice boards out of that.

I'd seal the end grain with paste wax or something to keep them from cracking too bad.

I hit 'em with Anchorseal two hours after parking the trailer.

Can kinda see the gloopiness in this pic.  Good stuff...

Might take you up on that!  Borderline on being worth the drive for that much wood, but hey, it's a couple days of warmth! I think we're destined to meet FTF some day anyway so may as well get it over with.

We can work something out for a schedule, probably kind of crazy for the next few days with Thanksgiving, and I'll probably be hauling those logs to the mill at some point.  You in any big hurry to get them out of the way?  I can do that if needed, otherwise we'll just go with 'at your convenience'.

I care!

Good decision OP!

Anyone know of a feller near Wentzville who'd take 3 large live oaks that need to be removed?   I have a friend who has them on their property and we were just discussing last night that they should be made into lumber, not firewood.

I wish I had the skillset to fall them.

I can add my manual labor to the task though, if someone is interested?

@67Firebird right now I'm tentatively scheduled to get the logs from the OP to the mill on Saturday, and Sunday looks like rain all day (not to mention Christmas Eve).  Kind of a perfect storm of schedule, weather and holidays for me right now, but we should be able to work something out soon.  Short days ain't helping things any either

Your logs look to be from a shingle oak. Use it as you would red oak, although it’s a little more prone to split when installing fasteners. Using a slightly larger drill bit than usual should alleviate the problem.

Thanks!  We were thinking willow oak, but with oaks it's hard to tell because of all the hybridization.  Looks and acts like red oak, though (from what we've split for firewood from the tops).

I was working on my own bandmill when the world kinda came apart at the seams.  One of these days I'll get in a position to finish it off and be able to cut up whatever I want whenever I please.

Those bandmills are a rabbit hole. I added my own hydraulic pump/valve, power saw head and carriage feed. I built the trailer package based on the Norwood factory option and also mostly finished up a hydraulic claw style log turner. Attachment Attached File

FPNI.

Cut into lumber of any kind you will use.  Dry them first.

@67Firebird don't give up on me!
Been really crazy over the holidays, and been dodging weather to get some critical household stuff done.  Seems I'm never really ready for winter when it gets here, and the dang sun only wants to shine when I have to "work" work.

I haven't forgotten about ya... I will probably have to wait out this cold snap though; it ain't gonna be fit for man nor beast out there for the next week.

Things are lookup up though!  Our lowest forecast low has gone from -12F to -5.  Now if they could just bump that up by another 60 degrees or so...

@67Mustang haven't forgot ya bro!

You know as well as I how the weather's been since we "talked" last, but this weekend's shaping up to be pretty nice.  I could make time either Sat or Sun to come clean up those logs for you, but it's totally at your convenience.  I know the first nice weekend after a stretch of winter also tends to get clogged up with other chores around the house, so if you're busy no biggie at all.

Looks like a nice place ya got there.

We should be able to take care of the standing trees too.  Normally I don't really like to do that because somehow or another I'd end up crushing somebody's Vette or Rover's memorial headstone or something, but these look to be pretty much in the clear.  The dead one should probably come down before it surprises and smooshes somebody anyway.

Hey, I got to meet Someone From The Internet and didn't even get swindled, probed, or abducted.  Win!

Nice to me ya, '67, and we'll get the rest of it cleaned up over the next few weekends.

@67Firebird if you're wondering, I didn't fall off the face of the planet this weekend... took a spill last Tues carrying a bunch of lumber, came down hard on my side and have been laid up ever since.  I ain't nearly as resilient as I used to be, turns out.

Hoping to be back on my feet by next weekend, might be able to swing by for another load then.  We'll see how things go, just keeping you posted!

Thank you.

I'm a little surprised at how long it's taking to bounce back, but I'm almost back to the point where I can stand up without doing my Man From The OOOF Meme impression.

Oh, and kinda back to the OP, after weather setbacks I eventually got the timbers back from the sawmill (coincidentally the same day I went by 67's place).  Ended up with eight 16'ish 6x6's and a few 2x6's.

Still on the trailer due to previously mentioned operator imbalance and malfunction.

That looks great!!!

But:  Why didn't the guy tail-gate it?  When I get rock for my one mile gravel road, I never have to touch it until it's time to maintain it:
