Think standard rifling on a savage 243 is 9.25". How well will it stabilize 100 and 105 gr bullets?

Read a comment, a guy stated that his savage would start to keyhole past 200 yards with anything over 80gr. My sons patriot shoots heavies well but we have not taken it past 200.

That's odd.  The drag on the bullet falls off faster than the spin does so most (it's the internet - no absolutes here) bullets get more stable as they go down range.  I've never seen a rifle/pistol that suddenly got unstable at some range.

I have. I encouraged a co-worker to get at least a 1:9 twist for his .223 bolt action coyote gun. Instead, he bought a Browning A-bolt in .223 and it sent heavier bullets sideways through the target backer at 100 yards.

Why do I even try.

Just because you see something keyhole at 100 yards doesn't mean it was stable at 25, 50 or 75 and then suddenly went unstable.  The bullets you saw keyhole were probably never stable.

Are you saying this guy's rifle was shooting great groups at close ranges and then the bullets suddenly became unstable?
