I am just starting to shoot at longer ranges. Had my Creedmoor out at 1000 yards yesterday. Once we figured out dope it was very doable and rewarding.

I put together a AR to practice with at shorter range but still hoping to take it out to 600 or so. My question is how much will 5.56 move steel at say 600 or 800 yards? Willit be enoghtthat i can see it swing from a hit or hear a ring? I know there are a lot of variables involved. But will it be a exercise in frustration becouse it wont move the steel at all and hardly ring it?

I can hear 3/8 ar500 plates ring at 600 yards using 5.56. Not as loud as 6.5 but it'll still ring.

You are probably going to want something smaller that will move and give you visible feedback

77 grain starting at 2650 ring 3/8 loud enough you’ll hear it ring at 700 yards

It goes dink instead of dong.

As you are learning, it depends, 3/8 or 1/2” and plate size. A 10” or larger 1/2” will barely move. A 6” will move. Single strap moves more than a double strap. A 8” single strap will move when hit with 223. Lighter steel is better. Fresh paint helps so you can see hits vs marked up plates. Shoot the 6” plates if you can.

If you want easier spotting go 6 ARC and get better ballistics too. 223 is pretty hard to spot beyond 600 unless they’re smaller free hanging plates or have fresh paint, neither of which are always feasible to have unless it’s your own range. On a day with a lot of mirage or anything but the best glass even seeing the hits on fresh paint can be difficult at times at extended ranges.

This.

It is almost impossible to hear it with double EPs, even if the outer is a set of electronic muffs.  That is why many who shoot that range have flashers on the plate.

This plus they make hit indicator lights now. I have not played with one yet. My.223 with 75gr ELDM will move a 18” 1/8 or 3/16 disc blade at 800. My wife can hear the impact but I cannot. The concave blades ring really well. So part will depend on the quality of your plate. Cold roll steel thuds more. But it will also splash paint really well and make a shiny spot if you have some light hitting it and not in the shade. Plus there is target cameras available now just depends how high tech you want to go. Personally I like to paint my plates white or fluorescent orange. Then let them dry and paint them black. It makes for a decent splash pattern.

Paint is a good idea. One of my ranges is a club, not sure i can paint them how i want. The other is a private 1000 yards on property i have access to. Only a few peices of steel but i can ask about putting fresh paint on them. I am sure they wont mind.

I could also buy my own 3/8 plate and hang it where i want it on that range. The other day i shot at a large steel silhouette. Painted red with a small white square in the center. It was fun becouse the white square was a smaller hard target to hit. But if you missed you could see how far off you were and adjust. Maybe i could copy that idea with like a 12" plate.
