If you really want a piston the you can look into the LWRC REPR and LMT is supposed to make a piston barrel for the MWS.
You will have more options with a DI and with the MWS you can change calipers easily. HK guns have always been cool but unless you really just can't stand not having anything but a 417 there are better options around. Here's a video about the higher end .308 rifles you might enjoy. The MR762 would be "worth it" if they came with a chrome lined barrel, adjustable gas block, normal takedown and pivot pins, and ambi controls like the actual G28, M110A1, or some variants of the HK417.

The M110A1 is the coolest battle rifle ever made. Would love to build a MR out into a clone but I’m too poor.
