I don't imagine this question has a good/clear answer. I'd love to get some thoughts though. I have a couple of 308 AR's now. I have wanted to build a mk12ish rifle for a while now for fun, but I'm having a hard time imagining a practical situation where I'd pick a mk12 over a 308 AR.

Convince me to build an 18" precision AR.

I think you answered your own question....

Q: "I'm having a hard time imagining a practical situation where I'd pick a mk12 over a 308 AR"
A:  "for fun"

Make it lightweight and then it will be lighter than the 308's?

"easier to carry"

Ammo price would be one answer

This seems to be the going trend. And I've definitely built rifles before just for fun ha.

You are spot on.  I almost never shoot my mk12 mod 1.  I'd rather shoot one of my shorter ARs or my large frame.  The 18" at is the worst configuration IMO.  It's long, heavy, and the extra 50 fps don't make a difference.

Years ago I ended up with an extra SR25 that I sent to GA Precision to have built out as a .260 Mk12 (sorta) rifle.  Ended up having to sell it a while later when some unexpected bullshit bills hit, but I really miss that rifle.

Someday I'll put together a 5.56 Mk12 to scratch that itch again a little cheaper than the GA Precision boys charged me.

Coyote and/or pig hunting.  But 16” Mod H is best Mk12 and what I’d opt for for slightly better balance and marginally lighter weight in the field.

I live my mod O but if I had to do it again it would be a mod H . I’ll still shoot my mk12 a lot more than my big precision gun just due to bullet and powder cost.

I have a precision AR10 and a MK12 ish. The MK12 is a fair amount lighter and cheaper to shoot, plus "quieter" when suppressed. The 77gr SMK out of the MK12 is a very capable round for intermediate + a little ranges. When I step out past 400 or so yards the AR10 is more forgiving in the wind. IMHO.

Why not a Mk12ish in something like 6 ARC? Ballistics better than .308, still a small frame gun with low recoil.

Opposite here.

Tore down my 18” to build something else and making my DD5 a Spr/dmr-ish rifle.

I need to stop reading posts like this. I have precision builds in 6.5 creed, 308, 5.56, and 6.5 Grendel. I’m trying to resist 6 ARC.

I need to stop reading these too!  I started working on a 6 ARC, then picked up an AR-10 upper and lower on sale from Aero Precision this summer.  Not sure what to build with it.

I've got a Mk12 Mod 1 in 5.56 and a 16" .308 LMT MWS with an extra 20" barrel in .260 REM for long range precision.  The 6 ARC is going to be similar to the Mk12, so maybe I'll build a 6.5 Creed or even a .243 with the AR-10 - no luck finding a .260 match barrel for it.  Trouble is I likely don't have enough years left to use more than one or two of these - LOL.

Let me know when someone manages to make larger case head rounds as reliable as 5.56. I won’t hold my breath.
